Jeep Wranger 2014 - front and rear cameras
Discussion
Something I have been half hankering about is using the Front Camera input on the Challenger to take a feed from an overtaking camera mounted on the windscreen top right corner. OK, I can work around it, but on Scottish roads, that extra few lateral feet of visibility will not be a detriment.....
However, the major impediment has been finding a camera with a suitably long lens on it. The standard dashcam / parking camera fish eye lens is no use. This needs to be something with a 50mm or longer lens to look down the road, not 3 feet over the bonnet (OK, hood....) And small enough to be unobtrusive in the top right of the windscreen.....
I don't ask for much.....;)

Can’t help with the front but I fitted a rear, spare wheel mounted rear cam on my JK. This was with an Alpine double din head unit for which you’ll need a fascia adapter and a canbus compatible head unit wiring adapter.

Is the canbus adapter necessary to use steering wheel controls etc? They’re out of stock so wondering if I can go without.
Also ordered a Kenwood CarPlay Bluetooth head unit 7” and a kenwood camera for front + spare wheel mounting camera kit.
The AV unit has a rear camera and another av input so should be able to fit both.
It does do the steering wheel controls but depending on what the stock radio is, the existing amp can need a canbus signal to tell it to turn on. Without the adapter you may find that the new head unit powers up OK but the existing amp doesn’t so you won’t get any sound.
Mine didn’t work without one but I know some others haven’t needed it. From memory, cars that have the basic sound system without an amp and sub are OK without an adapter. If you’ve got a sub in the boot then you’ll almost certainly need it.
Some (all?) modern double din head units don’t let you access certain functions and settings without the handbrake being on - for safety. You can buy a little device that attaches to the handbrake wire on the head unit that fools it in to thinking the handbrake is on, or you can connect to the handbrake sensor wire that runs on the passenger side of the centre console and up the RHS of the passenger footwell (think it’s green/white). If you’re connecting your front cam to the video in then you may want to do the former as otherwise it may not let you select the front cam whilst moving.

I think that’s only for pre-facelift (before 2012) but send them an email, they were pretty helpful when I contacted them.
Doh, you're right. I will contact them.DarrenO'D' said:
I fitted mine to our 2018 jk (big screen standard alpine unit) the handiest thing was an app called j scan, lets you program the screen for auto reverse camera change, and lot’s of other things also, well worth the small cost
Will take a look at that, thanks for the suggestion.Gassing Station | Yank Motors | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
