Non-rusty alternatives to the MX-5

I've been considering the NC MX-5 as a daily driver, however I live fairly near to the coast and the car will need to live outside.

How about the last generation of MR2? How do they cope with rust?

Are there any other alternatives of a similar cost of ownership, age, and driving experience? Practicality only needs to be good enough for a weekly supermarket shop.

I wouldnt totally overlook them as you will find an example somebody has loved but it wont be easy.
The less loved of them all but still a cracking car.
