Caving. Wtf?!

Anyone on here a caver?

I watched "The last descent" recently, and stuff like that genuinely petrifies me.

I can't ever get my head around why someone will inch themselves through a pinch point not knowing if they can inch back out again!

Agreed. Complete madness. See also ascents of dangerous rock faces (ie Matterhorn, Eiger etc) sans rope.

I think unexplored cave diving has to be up there as the most dangerous sport going.

The YouTube channel Scary Interesting reads Wikipedia articles to suspenseful music about diving accidents among other things, it's quite compelling.

I did a bit of caving when I was younger, rock climbing too, amongst other things. Never anything particularly extreme though.

I think some people are wired very differently to the norm and will explore ever more extreme ways of getting a thrill. I'd imagine back in our caveman days most extreme risk takers would have been eaten or killed

I did caving and even a couple of cave dives back in my student days

It’s pretty much all on known and mapped routes, which isn’t to say that you can’t find yourself pretty tightly wedged in, so not for the claustrophobic

Exploring new routes takes some nerve, and a buddy ready to pull you out by the ankles

Not seen the film, but just reading about the Nutty Putty Cave is enough to make me feel queasy. Probably one of the worst ways to go.

I don't mind tourist caves like Cheddar, but not a chance you'd find me doing any "proper" caving, no matter how tame.

I hike all round the Yorkshire Dales and I'm particularly interesting in the caves and mines.

One of my teachers from school is an internationally renowned cave photographer. Some of his photos are absolutely breath taking, I can kind of see why people do it.

I tried it once as a kid on an outdoor pursuits course - pretty tame stuff I guess, in the global scheme of things. It was enough for me to know that I didn't ever want to try it again.

Only thing more terrifying than caving for me is underwater caving.

Anyway, if you have an hour to kill, this is a very interesting story.

It appeals to me. But then I have climbed Matterhorn, Eiger, Everest etc, although not without ropes, but I do have a screw loose for this sort of stuff.
