radar detectors ?
Discussion
There has been 2 Draft SIs (Statutory Instrument) raised against 'Speed enforcement detectors'. The plan to make them illeagal in 2 areas.
Breifly here they are:
"The first SI, The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use)(Amendment) Regulations, would be made under section 41(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988. This would create an offence of using detection devices in a motor vehicle. The offence would attract either a fixed penalty notice (currently £60) with a three point licence endorsement, or a Court can impose a fine up to £1000 with a three to six point licence endorsement"
And...
"The second SI, The Wireless Telegraphy Apparatus (Receivers)(Exemption)(Amendment) Regulations, would be made under powers in section 1 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949. This would make it an offence to install or use these devices without a licence. The maximum penalty for this offence would be £5,000 in a Magistrates’ Court."
I do not yet know if any of these have been successful but it cant be good news.
I also wrote to the DETR to try and establish whether GPS based units would come under SI 1 or not? The answer was very unclear.
Any extra info on where the SIs are up to would be good....

How can a GPS come under the same ACT? that means all incar navigation systems should be illegal, all they are is GPS's with waypoints in them, just about any GPS can be made to behave in the same way!
As to the latter I feel if it's not already been done some one will start eventing electronic warfare equipment for the raod!

I agree! but is your average copper doing a roadside check going to think this. When he confiscates it and give you a fixed penelty or similar cos it looks like it 'detects speed cameras' I just hope they dont have the power to destroy such devices as they do in France (using your own wheels!)...
As for the electronic warefare, its bound to happen. esp with all the cameras appearing everywhere that read your plates like the ones to be put in catseyes...
I can see some VERY embarassing court cases coming up where the police's arguments that GPS based systems "detect" cameras is ripped to shreds by any half competent lawyer (assuming such a thing exist
).
There is a counter argument for the use of these devices which is that, if the cameras have been placed there for safety reasons (as we know they ALL are
) then the warning provided by the device is actually a warning of an impending danger which you should slow down for. And if it makes you slow down, surely that's a good thing ??!!
Or then again, maybe it's not because they can't make any money out of people who don't speed......

If they are going to make it illegal to warn you of speed cameras, does that mean all those signs will go? Especially the ones with no camera near by....is it any wonder we have no respect for speed enforcement when they blatently lie to us about the location of cameras? If they are telling porkies about the camera locations, one can only assume they are being less than honest in their Speed Kills claims as well
If they want people to respect law enforcement then they need to enforce it clearly and fairly

They may be able to do it along the lines of "using a device to avoid detection while conducting a criminal act" type legislation. However I don't think so. I bought a Geodesy and there comment were along the lines of the "Police like us and think it a good idea and help us with blackspots etc" If true a good thing !!
As for the camera signs I've always wondered why they don't do one with a cross through it when you exit the area that would be much more useful

quote:Are you not the same meatball who got caught at 102mph? Was this before or after buying the detectors? ;-) (only kidding, we all get caught eventually).
I own 3 radar detectors and 2 of them are top of the range units and they get used every day and even if they do get band it wont stop me using them and if i can get a jamer that will stop the cameras flashing at me then i will get one fitted and they can kiss my kilt![]()

I would like to start with saying that im not a meatball and yes I like to go 100+ on roads I know but trefor im not that fu@£ng idoit that got dun fot 102 mph
Well Mel to the rescue once again and thanks for calling me a MEATBALL
and my grammatical correctness of a 4 year old is due to all that fine malt from the land of the gods where I live
The detector I use has saved my bacon more than a few times and I would recommend one any day
(only kiding, we all get caught eventualy) well im going to live for ever

Campbell.
Just out of interest what do you drive with all these detectors on the dash board ???? There's nothing in your profile. I'd also dearly love to know what job finances your habit of radar detectors and cars so that I can earn a few extra quid by getting my dyslexic dog out earning a crust.
