Good evening,

Looking for a cheap, less than £4000, 4x4 for rubbish back lanes and fields.

Jeep products may be good. I know they are not up to European standards of finish but not the primary car.

Any thoughts? Barge pole or have a crack?

Lexus is the obvious thought but are the RX any good?

Thanks.

I had a 3.0 CRD WK Jeep Grande Cherokee a good few years back.

Yes an X5 of its era drove better on the road, and had a nicer interior, but the jeep just worked.

Of you can get a good one, i dont think you'll go too wrong.

The Grand Cherokee is the pick.

Looked at a Commander today but more cramped in the back as trying to get 7 seats in.

I understand that the Grand Cherokee may be more roomy as it is a 5 seater?

The answer may lie with a Lexus mind you particularly as being ULEZ would be a benefit but not a show stopper.

Commanders are terrible. Avoid. Grand Cherokee actually quite good, most generations.

Mk1 Cayenne V6 worth a look if you aren't doing a lot of miles. They have all the off road kit which they dumped for the mk2. Also Mk1 Touareg

Fair enough, will remove Commander from the list as we looked at one yesterday but cramped in the back as a compromise for it being a 7 seater.

Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi on LPG has cropped up which may be more interesting.

I have a Lexus RX and I love it, but I'm not sure I'd put it up against more deliberate off-roaders. It does have AWD but I suspect that decision is more about the hybrid system than anything to do with green laning.

That said, I did raise the car up on its air-suspension to get through some flood water the other day which is a bit off-roady biggrin
