Currently going around in circles a bit with the replacement family car. Due to the sort of trips we do I think a PHEV may be the way to go.

We currently have an XC60 PHEV which we really like but since getting a dog concerned it was going to be on the small side for longer fully loaded up with luggage trips.

I work WFH pretty much full time but work is within full electric range if I need to go in The majority of the time the car does short trips, school runs, supermarket etc all comfortably within electric range. My wife's family live a ~500 mile round trip away which is a trip we'll maybe do 2-3 times a year max otherwise its rare that we'll do more than 100-200 miles in one go. We can charge at home.

I was looking at bigger estates in the main as a replacement due to not having the space to store a roof box however due to some recent storm damage to the shed I've got some scope to incorporate some extra storage so going up in size class might not be necessary and while something of X5, XC90 some would be nice for those long trips it seems a bit daft when 95% of the journeys will just be around town and rural roads.

I was looking at the E class estate and they do a strange combo of a diesel plug in hybrid. Really like the interior of the E class however the PHEV really compromises the loading area in the boot.

I'm tempted just to get another XC60, the current car was a new lease and already in stock the only thing it doesn't have was the adaptive cruise as it became an option.

I want to buy outright with a maximum budget of 25k but could go over that but don't really want to.

What else should I be considering, that has a real world 20 miles full electric range? I could consider full EV something like a Polestar but not sure if the long range versions could do 250 miles fully loaded up on a single charge?

Cheers

I recently spotted the Q5 55 E tron. 2.0 TFSI with PHEV - combined 360+ bhp and faster to 60 than my S5 of the same era.

It’s a contender for me as my next car. They start at a smidge over your budget but think I’d want to spend a touch more to get the same level of spec my S5 has….if I changed anyway.

There’s a slightly cheaper 300ish bhp combined 50 model too.

Yeah looking a couple of k over for a higher mileage example for the 55 PHEV.

The boot on the X3 and Q5 is bigger on the standard version than the XC60 but smaller on the PHEV versions but not by a huge amount. The Volvo infotainment is a bit marmite but I get along with it fine and had a V90 estate before this. I like a nice interior too, the audi one looks a bit botled on the top of the dash. I know some of the Audi's it retracts into the dash but not sure about the Q5.

Yeah the screen is fixed it’s similar to my S5 but you get used to the placement and it’s it works well being non touch screen.

It's worth looking at the DS7, got a great interior, looks great too. Also the Citroen C5 Aircross is a great SUV, huge boot and a lot of car for the money. Not sure if it's your thing, but you can get an almost brand new MG HS PHEV for your budget, it comes with plenty of kit and a surprisingly good interior.

Skoda Superb and Octavia both available as a PHEV estate.

The Mercedes PHEV boots are a joke with that shelf!

Ideally you'd get something like a 545e touring, but I haven't seen any in estate format yet and also they are way over budget. Even for a 530e you'd need well over £30k for a touring.

If I was in your situation, I'd probably get a Volvo V90 T8

You'll get a lot for your money going for a Skoda Superb iV. Not as quick as what you currently have, but certainly not a slow car

Yeah you're in Cat S territory for 30 k for the 5 series E estate. I've had Skoda's in the past and like them but don't know if I'd buy one outright. The interior is a bit meh in my opinion (digi dash etc seems to have been an optional extra) and they're not as good value as they once were.

Thanks. Will look more into the DS7 the Merc and BMW are on the older side for the money and with smaller batteries on heavier cars I don't expect the electric only range is going to be much.

As mentioned above, if the DS7 fits the bill, it's worth looking at the Citroen C5 Aircross, it's a lot of car for the money, bigger boot and should be able to get nearly new.
