Our beloved XC90 2.5t has been given the last rites at 210k. So we need a replacement asap maximum £5k but would love it to be a little cheaper. I could just get another XC90 but am thinking about alternatives. We live in Herts and drive into London once a month so Petrol is preferable but not essential, auto is essential. I guess we're looking at things with 100k+ in my budget so conscious of running costs and big bills.

Initial thoughts from some reading:
Q7 - huge, nice inside, only really diesels, ££ to maintain, lots around
Sorrento Mk2 - good reviews but diesel only
S-Max/Galaxy Ecoboost - look ideal but big concerns about Powershift
Qashqai+2 - look OK but maybe too small across second row for 3 teens?
Elgrand/Alphard/Elysion - hard to get a good one within budget and lots don't have 3 x 3 point seat belts in the 2nd row
Viano V350 - look nice but hard to get petrol one within budget

Any advice/thoughts on above and anything else I should consider?

I'll be keeping an eye on this as I expect to be in the market for something similar soon. One that keeps catching my eye that isn't on your list is the Outlander, seems quite well regarded but might not be great for you and the London trip, the PHEV isn't available as a 7 and I imagine the ICE ones wouldn't be ULEZ compliant.

Mitsubishi Grandis has plenty of space and should be reliable or if you can cope with 6.5 seats (the middle seat is only small) the Mazda 5 is pretty car like to drive, the petrol is fast enough for day to day and the sliding doors are great.

Thanks for the replies. The Boss has ruled out 'any Ford', Outlander looks OK but most are diesels and pretty small boot, definitely need 3 decent sized seats in middle row as have 3 teens there on long trips. Teen in middle already very cramped in the XC90.

Peugeot 5008 (first gen) looks practical if dull and mostly diesel but lots of kit for the budget. Liking the Sorrento esp after seeing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eU_TAF89hE

If you just want value and a job done look also at the VW Touran and Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. You may struggle to find a petrol but should meet the space requirement.

I'll echo one of the comments above, a VW touran would be job jobbed. Most are diesel and if you get pre 07 i dont think they have a DPF to worry about.

Alternatively, the japanese import stuff are usually great, theyre usually petrol autos
Honda Stream/ stepwagon/odyssey .
Toyota corolla Verso (id avoid the autos and diesels)
Nissan Cube can be had as a 7 seater.

high mileage ex minicab Toyota prius plus might just be in budget and pretty bulletproof

Otherwise the usual toyota previa

Toyota Verso 1.8 petrol auto. 33mpg around town. £180ish tax. I had 2, very reliable. Some people don't like the noise from the CVT gearbox but didn't bother us. 3 individual second row sliding seats plus 3rd row if you need it. Not going to compete size wise with an xc90 but better on petrol, tax and reliability.

Beware of these. I had one for 3 years and found the build quality was less than good. I bought mine from a Mercedes Specialist in Nuneaton with FSH. It was perfect when I bought it but stuff seemed to go wrong every couple of months. I recognise that my view is anecdotal but my experience is in line with common problems reported online.

Thanks for the replies. Some thoughts:
- I've driven a first gen Touran but it feel more like enlarged hatchback in terms of internal space (presumably the same for the Verso).
- The new Touran/Ahambras look much better but only very high mileage examples in my budget.
- We rented a C4 Grand on holidays years back and I didn't like the 'quirky' interior and the dual-clutch auto at all.
- Mazda 5 looks good but middle seat is barely a seat and won't fit out youngest who's 5'7" already.
- I like the look of an Elysion but middle seat in second row of 8-seaters is quite small and only has a lap belt (I think).
- We leased a Zafira Tourer 1.4T for a bit and it was great, if a little dull but I can't get an auto petrol for our budget. I guess we could consider a diesel but are they any good?
- Tribeca looks good as a decent petrol engine but the reviews are diabolical, might try to look at one...
- Grand Voyager looks OK but they only have the 2+2+3 seating config which won't work for 3 kids + luggage for holidays

At this point I'm focussing on a Sorrento, Tribeca, Zafira...and another petrol XC90 I guess!
