Currently have a 2018 m4 CP F82. The pcp is due to renew in the new year and am looking at options. As the kids have grown up and now drive themselves and the wife has a disco sport, the time is now to buy something selfish. The unsafe option is to go left field and buy a gen1 v8 r8, there’s also a stunning 2003 sl55 I have my eye on, but on the BMW approved used site, a well spec’d 840i coupe came up. (Tech and premium packs)

No issues with the M4, definitely the best car I’ve owned by far, and a viable option is to pay it off and keep it long term, but I’m just weighing up the various options I have.

Anyone run the 840i? Will I regret chopping in the m4?

Would definitely keep the M4, the 840i would be an underpowered boat/cruiser in comparison, so unless that is what you are looking for, M4 that you know

I've currently got a F82 M4 and I've had a F13 640d. As much as I like the idea of the 840i, I think you might be a bit disappointed in comparison to the M4 though.

The 6 and 8 series are much more of a cruiser for me, and you definitely feel their size/weight in the corners, and they don't feel especially sporty to drive(nothing wrong with that of course, but they are definitely a lot different I reckon).

I have had F82 and 640i and wanted to try something different.

So I got an F90 M5, now that’s a car!!!!

Superb upgrade, loved it.

Will sleep on it and visit the showroom this week and have a poke around the 8 series, but I think deep down I know the m4 will be hard to beat.

The 8 series is a fantastic car, but it’s a GT car, so it’s very different to the M4. My only concern with an 8 series at the moment is the depreciation is a hard pill to swallow.

The Merc is a decent enough car, but people are generally BMW or Mercedes people as they drive very differently. I always say that BMW M cars are like a scalpel, they require and reward precision with handling and balance, whereas the Merc AMGs are more akin to a sledgehammer, they utilise grip and brute force.

Definitely time to buy that R8. It won't be an option in the future. The M4 is still just a fancy family car, the R8 will offer you something you haven't had before.

Appreciate the input. Definitely a first world problem and actually quite a nice dilemma to ponder smile

Will enjoy the search and the choices ahead.
