I was talking to my Dad about his retirement and he’s wanting to treat himself to a Jaguar as his retirement present. He’s got around £16k to spend on a car. But which spec would be best?

Depends on what he wants? Petrol, diesel? what sort of mileage is acceptable on the car? is he bothered about mpg? or is it literally just the highest spec?

He’s after a diesel if possible as he’s planning some road trips. He’s not bothered about mileage. But wants one with full Jag history if possible.

I'd steer clear of the 2.0d ingenium engine, it has been problematic in both Jag and Land Rover vehicles, the timing chain can cause real issues. So that leaves the 2.2d or the 3.0d V6. For mpg, the 2.2 will obviously be better but I've had the 3.0 V6 d 'S' model and that engine is lovely with plenty of go in it.

I think for that money you'd be looking for something around 2014? Spec wise, the Portfolio is the highest spec, but if someone has ticked all the extras boxes you can get other models with pretty much all the goodies.

A friend of mine has an XF 3,0 Diesel S spec.

Utterly wonderful thing.

However he is also a competent mechanic who makes a significant part of his living by rebuilding Lion V6 diesel engines.

My personal favourite XF model is the S-V8

Rare, always well specced, usually private buyers, enthusiasts will appreciate it’s rarity, 4.2 V8 which is pretty reliable as these things go.

3.0d S, comes with 275bhp. I don't think there's any advantage in going with the lower powered versions of this engine? Portfolio spec seems to be the highest.
