Porsche garage grows....fleet move around! (another Cayenne)
Discussion
Fleet update time!
The 997 is not going anywhere - had it for 2 years and counting and I just love it.
Its a Gen 1 C4S manual with just 75K miles. No sign of bore score and no issues generally. Its also very easy to work on if you are half handy with spanners!
You may have already seen that the mods have started - spent about 3 days on and off (crawling on the drive!) fitting Eibach lowering springs all round as well as spacers to fill the wheels
Really happy with how it looks and drives now - it is much more raw with the lowered and widened suspension and feels a bit more "old school" like my old 964 C4S.
A couple of picks from today!

Im not using it as a daily as I have two small kids and my commute is around 100 miles round trip - dont really want to load that many miles on it.
So my daily drivers have been a choice between the following two:
Volvo V70 R - Jap import 2003

Bought in March this year and just sold it 2 weeks ago for a small profit. Lovely car and very practical but just felt a bit old - despite low miles it was 20 years old and you could feel it. Plus the Auto really sapped the power due to torque restrictions from the factory.
2005 XK8 4.2 S - with R bits

Bought this in Jan 23 - it is an absolute minter! No rust at all (all been sorted with proper repair sections) and a beautiful car to drive. 300 HP so not to slow and gets load of looks wherever I go - the 20 inch Detroit split rims are gorgeous and it looks good on the R-spec suspension.
This is currently for sale - hopefully will be gone by next week.
So what am I buying?
Well mind of got tired of owning 3 cars and paying tax, insurance etc 3 times for not a lot of miles.
Couldnt sell the 997 as already stated so decided to chop both the Volvo and Jag and buy...............................
Another Porsche......................
Introducing my 2010 Porsche Cayenne 957 GTS

Not sure what came over me but suddenly became obsessed with them! Cue constant looking on pistonheads, ebay, marketplace, autotrader......
Really wanted the later 4.8 V8 instead of the 4.5 - lots of issues reported on line with coolant pipes etc. Also wanted the 21 inch wheels and the air suspension........
Finally found a GTS (20HP more - up to 400), with air suspension, bodykit and sports exhaust.... It was cheap - I knew there were a few niggle but I think I got it for a reasonable price with some money in the kitty to sort things out!
First impressions:
Its a big car but the V8 makes it pretty spritely!! And that sounds!! oooooofffff - certainly very different to my old L322 (which I loved)
Air suspension is fantastic - very well damped and 3 different settings - sports, normal and soft
It also feels very well made and is well specced in general - electric everything, beautiful half leather / half alacantara seats etc.
Issues
Well - there are a few!
I felt it was a bit lumpy at idle and I was right - plugged it into my icarsoft for Porsche and found an issues with Valve lift - this is quite common and is due to a camlift solenoid.
Had this replaced by local independant - £250 all in so not too bad. Wouldve done it myself but a but of a faff - had to remove windscreen wiper mechanism and complete scuttle to get to it!
Secondly - air suspension - there is a fault not on ride height but on chassis performance - code is signal lead to sensor. Indy plugged it in and cleared faults and it hasnt come back - I think it is likely to be the pump has a slight leak so will probably get a rebuild kit! Not a big one
Door handle - this is a real pain - the doors drop over time and the door "catches" a bit on lower sill over time. This has put a bit of pressure on door pull and sometimes it pulls completely out of the latch! Ive ordered a shim kit to straighten the line of the door which will help but ultimately I will be having to strip down the door to replace the handle - bugger!
Wheel bearings - both front wheel bearings needed replacing as there was a horrible rumble from the front. Let the garage replace both of these (£700 + VAT) - OUCH!
So I will be getting the car back on Thurs with engine, wheel bearings and hopefully suspension sorted!
Will report back !

I really like a 957 and I think the GTS is the one to have if you want a sporty one, yes it's not a Turbo but that's a fair swap for slightly less bork factor.
The doors needing a shim is a pretty common thing as they get older. Make sure you have tools that will get into the door gap to slacken the hinge as a normal sized bit on a 3/8 ratchet may be too long. Oh and start with the small shim, a little goes a long way.
