This is the situation:

My car is a 2011 F11 535i SE auto

It has no drive mode select switch
It has an electrically adjustable steering column
It has an SE wheel without heating or paddles

I have bought a steering column cowl with heated wheel switch and adjustment joystick thing
I have bought a steering wheel with heating and paddles
I have bought a centre console switch panel with drive mode selector and have bought some pins and cable to make up the wiring for that

Probably obvious but what I'm looking to achieve here is working paddles, heated wheel and working drive mode select switch

I'm very comfortable on the hardware install and wiring aspect of all this and can just crack on and do that.

On the coding, I'm really struggling to understand what I need to do. A lot of online discussion about this but nearly all of it seems to assume some basic level of knowledge to understand the terminology being used. Part of me just think, get stuck in and figure it out but the last thing I want to do is f**k something up by being too gung ho.

I have a bimmercode compatible dongle and I'm happy to pay for bimmercode if that is the right tool for the job but it seems that while it might work it is not necessarily best practice. Something about not doing VO coding. Some of the guides I've read or watched are a few years old now and maybe out of date in terms of what can and can't be done.

So, should I be okay with just using bimmercode?
Should I just get someone else to do it? I'm struggling to find people in the north east who actually reply to enquiries I must admit.
Should I be looking at other software to do it?

Well I started looking at some of this today. Installed heated steering wheel with paddles and heated steering wheel button on the column.

Bought bimmercode.

Now here's the interesting thing. I had a look through it just to familiarise myself and when I look in the steering wheel module, there were options to auto-code both heated wheel and paddles. It auto backs up too so I thought I may as well give it a try.

Result is that paddles now work and heated steering wheel light comes on with the press of the button but no sign of any heat.

Leaves me with some diagnosing to do:

It strikes me that it could be a fuse since the car was not fitted with a HSW from new but I cannot find reliable info on which fuse it could be.

Alternately maybe bimmercode hasn't done a full job and on the amber light on the button is a red herring.

Any thoughts?

Scratch that. I have found the problem.

The connector SZL for the heated wheel is not populated. It wasn't that obvious when I plugged the wheel in the first time. Should have checked but when I took the airbag back off to check the wiring, sure enough, no pins in that connector.

Seems I can buy a populate SZL from ebay for about £200. This is starting to turn into an expensive upgrade!

Ever wish you hadn't started something? A new SZL will require coding to the car and re-aligning...
