So my steering wheel was stolen last night....

I assume they will nick the replacement soon after its on.

What are people doing to stop this from happening? I had a quick release removable steering wheel on my old Lotus's .... Not sure its possible on a BMW though?

Is there any other method, system to stop these absolute C872353ts ? Maybe file down the release bolt so they cant undo it?

Thanks

Would it stop them if highly persistent, no. But likely to move on to a less difficult target.

After I had a 5 Series stolen off the drive, the replacement wore one of these for a few years.

First of all you have my sympathies bobo - a neighbour of mine had his M Sport sporting wheel stolen from his F30 last week & I know what an absolute pain it was for him, with the broken glass mess, being unable to move the car, waiting for a tow truck, insurance claim & cost of excess… Needless to say those that do this are worthless scum, we sadly seem to have a lot of them amongst us.
Steering wheel theft seems to be a thing at the moment, not just for the airbag but the M Sport wheels are a desirable and expensive upgrade, quick and easy to remove and switch over. Short of feckless folk actually thinking & asking about where their used steering wheel might have come from, I think the only way to stop it is some sort of control on their sale.
For now, as bigdom says, a disklok would likely be the best way of preventing theft, although they are a bit cumbersome. I use a stoplock which covers the centre of the wheel & I hope would deter as makes it that much more difficult to quickly sell it on even if they can get it off

Disklock are a local company to me and I know they're well thought of...

I've gone for the Stoplock Pro Elite for my F31; we've had a spate of car break ins recently and it's something I've been meaning to do; this has spurred me on

Amazon have got them on their Prime Day offers, so £40 delivered. Well worth it for peace of mind etc...

from what i have read, the disklock makes it easier to steal the steering wheel.

they unbolt it at the column so the only deterent would be a chain round the damn think fastened to the car or ..... a removable steering wheel!

Disklok made no difference here, don't know if it made it easier but it certainly didn't deter. I've stopped bothering putting mine on.

they literally pull the wheel off by hand using excessive force ...Disklock adds leverage and helps.

Have a look at Armaplate Resolute. Bloke I know owns Armaplate and has started to make these.

Get your front windows lightly tinted, will stop the window from shattering making it harder to get in.

I can see it will help stop them easily taking the steering wheel but if they want to take the whole car and aren't overly fussed about damaging the steering wheel to get it then it would be pretty ineffective, same with the Armorplate Resolute above, simply cutting part of the steering wheel gets those locks off.

What is the weak point here - is the hex bolt being snapped or are they stripping the thread in the bolt or steering column?

Would a longer bolt help (assuming it fits) - obvioulsy in conjunction with a Disklok?

as bad as it sounds my logic is if my steering wheel is chanied up, they will move onto an easier target.

shameful that BMW have designed a steering wheel that can just get yanked out in 5 seconds by hand.

i think if they need grinders and 10 mins they will think about a softer target instead.
