Electric drum kit for kids to learn

Evening fellow bongo bashers. My lads (9 and 4) want to be rock star drummers like daddy but a combination of neighbours and the fact it’s just a faff means that the Pearl Export is staying safely in the garage between gigging and if they want to actually learn, we’ll get an electric kit and learn on that. With Christmas coming up I’m looking for something that can legitimately be referred to as an instrument that sounds like drums (but nothing I’d want to take gigging), but below £200 would be nice. Any suggestions because I know less than nothing about electric kits.

I would be looking at 2nd hand roland or alesis for that budget but I'm no expert.

Anything mesh head if you can. My son started on used Roland kit for £150.


Budget in a cheapie amp. Whilst you can use headphones it is better you can hear the volume. Headphones can be turned up to 11 without you knowing and damage hearing.

That’s exactly what we found after googling - have you any experience of that little multi coloured thing as that looks an obvious starting point?

I’d say a used Alesis nitro mesh kit. My son has that to go with his Pearl kit.

It has a proper kick pedal with beater, mesh pads etc, seems well built.

It has been smashed at for three years or so, still looks new so I wouldn’t be concerned with a used kit.
