What do everything car for circa £20k

I know this has been done to death, but I'm totally stuck as to what to buy. I currently own:
A Skoda Superb estate, 2.0l diesel, 2012, 102k miles, manual
A Mazda MX-5 hardtop, 2.0l petrol, 2008, 40k miles, manual
I reckon I've got £17k cash plus the value of either/both cars to play with. I also have 2 young kids (4 & 7, so in car seats for another 5 years minimum) a dog, a wife!
What I want is something that is fun and something that can carry people; these two things can either come from separate cars or one unicorn car. My ideal would be a 997.2 carrera 2. Given that I drive the kids to school every day, this is a car for the future!
So, what to do...
My most recent thinking is sell the mazda, keep the skoda for dog/tip/manky winter duties. Then buy something like a Panamera so that I can get some enjoyment from a daily, whilst still having rear doors. Panameras seem to be vaguely reliable, have interesting engines, but a rear end that only a mother could love....
What other cars would you be considering in this scenario? I've previously looked at the Maserati Ghibli, but just didn't gel with it when I drove it. Alfa Giulia looks kind of interesting, I just haven't sat in one yet. I'm not that interested in Audi/BMW, I just don't find them interesting.
I guess fundamentally I'm looking for a 4 door, 4 seat car with a half-way interesting engine, reliable enough to run daily and not a standard german barge. I did look at an Audi S7 just to be thorough and it was just.....capable. Stupidly fast, just not engaging.

If your budget gets you into a Panamera with a decent engine...they're epic. Forget the rear end....you can't see that when you're driving it. Unless you're a total driving god, they'll do 80% what a 911 does, albeit with 4 seats and proper luxury. I ran a 4S with the 4.8 v8 petrol engine for 18 months and loved every minute.
