As above how reliable are these ? Or are they best avoided ? Saw one for sale only with good mileage. Basically looking for a reliable car to pick kids up from nursery and going to work .

I picked up one of these as a cheap runaround a few months ago and it’s been brill. At this price point I’m really surprised at how comfy and smooth it is. Lots of toys with keyless entry and cruise control with the dynamique model too.

Engine can feel a bit lacking sometimes especially up hills and does rev quite high at 70mph despite the 6th gear. Fuel economy is OK, getting around 38mpg mixed.

From the limited research I’ve done they can suffer from dephaser pulley failure, symptoms are a rattle for a few seconds when starting the car. If it’s really bad it will cause issues with the car cutting out.

They're very reliable & a decent car, also take a look at the 1.6 Astra.

Looked at these myself, and continue to have them in the back of my mind (if my current shed) decides to die.

Seem to remember hearing the cabin filter is a PITA i.e have to remove the clutch pedal assembly to change it, and also make sure the clutch is ok, as its a pig of a job on these, on the labour costs.

1.6 16v is a good strong reliable unit though i believe.

Like the poster above, the Astra J 1.6 is another good shout, another simple N/A engine.

Thank you for all your replies going to go see this one it’s a low mileage example . Will need timing belt and water pump replacement as it’s never been done .
