Helmut Marko is in the news again, having made more comments about the second Red Bull driver. This has been discussed on the Max Verstappen thread but it was taking over a bit, so here's a new thread all about Marko.

What are Pistonheaders' thoughts on this chap? Are his questionable comments unacceptable, or is he permitted to say anything he likes, because he once drove a Porsche 917 at Le Mans? Or is he just a harmless eccentric who 'speaks his mind' and is entertaining as a result?

I find him a hard person to take to, so I'll vote "berk".

He's a consultant for an F1 team, not a role model, and didn't ask to be one. People getting offended for this IMO need to give their heads a wobble.

It's a sad indication of your standing that basic human equality and respect is categorised under 'role model'.

I'd simply like him to treat people with parity.
It's like being surprised that your favorite footy player is a berk, or that max Mosely liked a bit of rough. You don't know the guy, yet you, and others all want to lump on because he made a daft comment. Does that define him, probably not, but that doesn't fit the agenda? As for you 'judging' me, knock yourself out. Perhaps you need to step back from the internet?

It's lots of 'daft' comments, over a long time frame, resembling something that might be seen as a pattern.

He's old, cranky, and, FWIW, I think the stuff that appears racist is in some ways less of an issue than the regular and unpleasant undermining of the second driver in his own team. How the hell does he think doing that is going to be helpful in any way at all?

Berk

Not necessarily for the recent comments, although they were mis-guided, more for the fact that…..he’s a berk.

Any man that can say "we have the data, Max did not brake test Lewis" then only to find the data showed very clearly he did, is a t**t IMHO. I hate that kind of person.

I would speculate that he does actually know how to spell his name.

Berk isn’t a strong enough word, there are lots of other 4 letter words that are much more suitable.

Also, calling him a berk is an insult to this legend biggrin

I understand he’s 80 odd years old so I don’t expect him to be a fully paid up member of the wokerati, but that doesn’t excuse him from being a generally unpleasant bellend.

Of course spelling and racism are on the same scale.

When it comes to talking publicly about cultural stereo types other than your own, you need to talk about positive ones not negative otherwise you're going to be rightly derided.

The F1 media have played up Marko as some kind of ghoulish paddock figure and given me the impression that he's not a nice man, I've no idea if this is true but the signs aren't great plus he's an old Austrian so what do we expect.....(irony)

It probably comes down to how untouchable the Red Bull owners think they are.

If they have the slightest awareness they will quietly sideline him and his absence will be completely unnoticed after a day.

It does however give rise to the question of why Lewis is such a "problem" for them... With those kinds of attitudes I wonder.

It might just be because he's less in the public eye, but I find him less objectionable than Horner.
