EGR Cooler leading to piston failure?
Discussion
Hello,
A piston on my 2017 BMW 520D has failed and failed and coincidently I have reveived a recall from BMW regarding the EGR Cooler. The BMW garage think the damage was caused by leaking coolant - this sounds very much like the cause of the problem; has anyone had the same experience? Does this sound plausable?

It does if enough coolant was sucked into the intake manifold to hydro lock the cylinder. Most EGR coolant leaks are external though. The BMW garage think the damage was caused by leaking coolant - this sounds very much like the cause of the problem; has anyone had the same experience? Hmm I suppose it is possible as the EGR cooler faults are fundamentally related to coolant being allowed into the inlet manifold. From there it is possible given the right circumstances it could get into the cylinder. Quite what those circumstances are and proving it is another leap of faith entirely.
