Just had my 335d oil leak problem hopefully sorted out. Had gone into my local dealer twice over this and were next to useless ,but I am naming BMW N Oxford as being great in every way always wanted to take it there as I use it but knew I would have to leave it with them 55 miles away from West London but they gave me a curtesy car

When I went in to collect the car got on really well with the service receptionist, had a good chat

They had spent 3 hours diagnosing the issue but because I had gone into the other dealer twice they were only going to charge me £126. I thought that was really decent. I said to her that's handy as I thought I would have to pay my excess of £250.00 on my warranty, what with them doing the M.O.T at the same time and passing my car without 2 new tyres which I felt I would need I told her I was quids in.

She was unaware I had an extended Warranty and she said that in her opinion as BMW Extended does not pay for diagnosing a problem she would personally only use the Warranty if it was a known large part that needs replacing with no major diagnosing and not mention it unless that was the case, keep it in your back pocket as it were
She did infer "off the record" that if this job they did for me had been done under my Warranty I would have probably ended up paying my £250 excess.

Food for thought ,because I was thinking of upping my monthlys to get a £100 excess but with her thought process that would be a waste of time.

FWIW both times my F31 went to BMW for warranty work; they stated that they'd charge a fee for the investigation and if they found something, then it'd all get wrapped into the warranty work & I'd pay the £250 excess

Twice it's been in, (well, twice for the first claim, the latter part of the work they added into the first claim) and then the 2nd full claim; I only paid the excess. No other fees

So for me, the diagnosis fee is there IF they don't find an issue, or if said issue isn't covered under warranty (ie consumables etc); if they DO find an issue that's covered under warranty; you only pay the excess

Actually I make you right thanks ,thinking about it thats how I remember it .She was very helpful but on this she has mussied the waters.

On a tangent they had the Z8 from James Bond up for sale £199k....guess I can swallow that price more than a souped up M4 the M4 CSL up for £127k ...bonkers

TBF they should have checked if you had warranty when the car went in. That's what they did at Rybrook then I took my M6 in. They have access to all the data and can see if you have cover.

When my 335i went in under warranty, the only thing that wasn't covered was a thermostat because I asked them to change it (whilst they were doing the waterpump it made sense). Diagnosis and everything else was rolled in as part of the warranty claim as without the diagnosis they wouldn't know what to replace.

So had around 4k work and cost me £210 (my excess was £100)

Actually that brings up another question, how often is a diagnosis needed I wonder for claims and as the master tech told me, funny enough using your word , rolled, that diagnosis costs are usually rolled into the Excess. That made me thisink that paying extra for zero excess or even your £100 as opposed to my £250 is false economy. I had been thinking of changing my monthlies to £100,but at BMW hourly rates that would soon be eaten up.

The diagnosis is separate from the excess, they are two different elements.

If the warranty pays out, it covers the diagnosis and repair (up to the purchase price of the car) minus the excess (either £0, £100 or £250)

If the warranty does not pay out, then you have to pay the full cost of the work that has been carried out.

That's my experience too.

Agreed you did and thankyou .

As the OP I was thinking to let this thread fade away or once again do my best to explain what the new service reception lady said.......as I have been going to them N Oxford for 15 years and BMW BERRY'S Chiswick had failed to spot the problem they were only going to charge me just £126 for the 3hrs they worked on it. When I said thankyou that is a result I thought I would have had to pay my £250 excess ,she was surprised that I had an extended warranty . She then said "probably" if they "control in the workshop" had known I had a warranty they "probably" would have invoiced the full 3 hrs and I would have had to pay the £250.

I now put this down to a one off situation and totally get you and others on here regarding how it actually/should should work, cheers.
