Undercover Police Spec 2011 Audi S5 Sportback
Discussion
As someone who loves overengined oddities - and who is allergic to front-wheel-drive, four-cylinder engines and turbos - I recognise that time is fast running out to buy all the cars I want before they’re outlawed and/or disintegrate away.
With that in mind, I’m on my third BMW 130i - having come to the realisation that this is the affordable fun car for me - as it’s lighter, faster and/or more engaging than the models that came before and after it. That just leaves a practical family car for urban journeys and trips with my 18-month-old son and his gigantic car seat and pram…
My target was always a B8 Audi S4 Avant and while saving up for a decent one, I went through a couple of 4.2-litre V8 Audi A6s and a Passat R36 Estate, which I enjoyed far more than expected - partly because of its intimately torso-clasping mega-seats and partly because of its musical VR6 engine.
However, the S4 struck me as the best long-term car for me, due to its lower tax, decent power, scope for modification, all the modern options I want, plus the fact it’s common enough to hopefully ensure decent parts availability (and reasonable prices, I’d hope), for years to come. Having - finally - sold my second A6 4.2 a few weeks back, I ramped up the S4 search. As you can see, I failed.
The 2010 116k-mile S4 Avant I wanted sold a few weeks before I found a buyer for my A6, so I missed out on a very heavily optioned car that I was certain had been extremely well looked after from the MOT history and a couple of interactions with the seller. Goodbye grey S4 with black and red leather, small wheels, pull up rear window blinds, B&O speakers, adaptive lights and all the other toys I could ever need. I suspect I could have nabbed it for around £9,750, too, which seemed better value than all the other well maintained S4s I could find…
Anyway, enough preamble…
