2020 G31 530d had from new

Its had at least 2 recalls for EGR issues, the most recent a software update earlier this year

And now I have just opened a bonus letter from BMW saying they will replace the whole unit after all sometime over the next year "when they can get parts"

In the meantime Iif Im worried I can take it in for a check however the letter states this doesnt mean that it wont burst into flames anytime afterwards so it seems a little pointless TBH

As you can probably detect from my tone Im a bit cheesed that Ive already been put out twice and as they insist on keeping the car for the whole day - no while you wait option - its a significant waste of my own time

The letter admits that they have problems as it says they will now warranty the EGR and any resulting damage for 15 years.........

Thanks for listening smile

I too have had my car in for EGR repairs last year, having had another recall letter I booked it in for the necessary on the 30th.
All good so far, having filled the reservoir on Wednesday on the Friday my wife and I decided to go some shopping about 1.30pm the car started and we made it off the driveway only for it to stop, it would not restart message water coolant low. I called BMW roadside assistance, I did not have a policy, however because the car was on a recall notice they would arrange for the car to be uplifted and taken to the local dealer and once on truck I was told to respond to the email which had confirmed a courtesy car would be available. By 5.45pm no one had arrived, phoned back and was told that the car would be picked up at midnight, no way, I said so arranged 9.00 for Saturday by 11.45 no truck, phoned back this time car uplifted 1.00
I did as was told and I replied to email, no reply after over an hour so phoned again, no response from the number I had been given, further calls revealed that the contact I had did not work weekends or bank holidays. Breakdown assistance would not authorise the courtesy car until complaints department authorised them to go ahead.
Despite numerous phone calls to different departments we will not receive a car until Tuesday p, Monday being a bank holiday
I have never in my 75 years been treated in such a complacent and derogatory manner. BMW ought to be ashamed of themselves

They should be offering to buy the cars back if there is a risk of an inferno and they do not have the parts to fix em.

Its certainly less than ideal however if it goes pop in the next year I have GAP that should see me in a shiny new replacement. As they no longer make a 530d thats a 540i or a Hybrid as far as Im concerned

I say GAP but as this is a long running and known issue I would expect some kind of backhander from BMW to keep me out of the tabloids...........

Mine went in last Friday, messages re coolant level, EGR cooler replaced with the exact one that the recall is all about in the first place. Was told they’re doing this as a last resort? Could be another year before parts are available. Still p***ed off that the EGR valve had to be replaced for exact same reason and performance issues the cooler has been recalled for but in no way is it related according to BMW. £455 down so far!!!

I have a 2019 G31 530d with an outstanding recall related to the EGR. Not sure if it has had some software before my ownership, but I booked in July for an appointment on 19th September in order to get a 'while you wait' slot..

I've not received any letters yet in my ownership.

I have 12 month warranty from the dealer I purchased from, but when I asked what happens in the meantime if something goes wrong, the answer was 'just call us up and we will deal with it' - hardly a resounding reassurance.

Thankfully it has been fine so far, no loss of coolant or issues.

Lets see if they replace the unit entirely or it is just software. Seems insane to replace a unit with the same part revision.

My old F31 had 3 (yes really) EGR coolers under recall.

I remember BMW's having a problem with their EGR coolers about 5-6years ago. They also couldn't keep up with demands and told customers to wait until they could book them in. Unfortunately by the time they got the vehicles into be repaired, the faulty coolers had damaged the plastic inlet manifolds resulting in a new manifold, which BMW wouldn't cover under a warranty and treated as a separate issue.
Just another black mark against Diesels in my book.

OP update:

Am wondering what the warning signs are of imminent combustion and badness and wonder if anyone is having similar issues

My car is rarely driven for short hops in town and its normal use is a 4h motorway trip once every couple of weeks or so

Over the last month it has started to "stutter" when pulling away from a standing start which was one of the things to look out for on the most recent BMW letter however everything else seems OK. It still does 55mpg at motorway speeds, doesnt smell and remains a weapon when red traffic lights change to green

Is the stutter in isolation anything to be worried about?

The recall/not recall letter that prompted my original post stated I could have the car looked at if worried however also said it was likely that nothing would be formally diagnosed on a spot inspection even if the EGR was playing up

Im also mindful that its 3 1/2y old and I have GAP and BMW have acknowledged that theres a problem

Cheers
