Quite an amazing collection of Nigel's memorabilia is soon to be sold via Sotherby's. This is not tat, we're looking at significant trophies, race/title-winning helmets, and race suits, etc.

Nigel can't have money troubles, surely?

I don't know about money troubles, but judging by the size of that collection, he may well have storage troubles!

IINM, Nigel has just turned 70 years old.

Perhaps it's simply a case of him thinking that, in his old age, there's not a lot of point in keeping all this stuff therefore it's best to sell it now and reap the benefits, rather than his family doing it when he's gone.

Could also be a storage thing - there's a lot of items there.

Surprised that he's letting certain things go - his final win trophy for example, but maybe he's taking the view that it's just 'things' and the memories are more important.

Some of the estimates seem very low, but maybe that’s how the auction business works.

Out of all of it, the podium caps curiously appeal to me.

Maybe I'm not enough of a "collector" but I don't see the appeal of most of those items for anyone not NM or his family. Would anyone really pay thousands for a trophy someone else won? Helmets etc could make interesting pieces in the right type of museum or mancave but what would you really do with "assorted karting medals and trophies"?

Both beauties..

Couple of interesting bits on there, I particularly like the Fangio signed picture.

To a die-hard fan (and, like him or loathe him, Nigel has many) these pieces are gold.

People will collect anything related to their hero, because it was owned by their hero.

Imagine if Senna's karting trophies came up for auction? Or his winning trophy from Monaco 1989, Or a coat he once wore? Or his qualifying time sheet from Monaco '88?

If not Senna, then anyone of the iconic F1 drivers from the past.

His museum in Jersey closed in 2019 so I would guess a lot of these items may have come from there.

I get that he has some fans and I was a huge fan myself when I was young. My prized possession at 7 years old was my Formula Tyco Nigel Mansell World Champion edition biggrin

I guess it feels a bit like stolen valour displaying trophies that were earned by someone else. I would happily have some of the other pieces if I had the money!

Agreed, I initially thought it would be cool to have some of his trophies on display if I had the money, and then instantly came to the same conclusion as you. Why would I want to own and display some trophies that were won by someone else?

It's a bit of history, I suppose.

I imagine Max's trophy that Lando just broke would do well at auction!

Wow some of those would be awesome to have in my Study. Sadly I am far too poor to be able to spend 5-10k on a Trophy etc

Won't most of the trophies be replicas? The podium originals are usually kept by the teams with the drivers getting copies.

How many hundreds of helmets and race suits will he have worn in his career? If he kept them all he'd need several auctions to dispose of them all. There are duplicates even in this sale, but no doubt he's holding on to a few still.

Why did BMW do an "Il Leone " edition bike ?...seems odd .

I bought a motorsports trophy in an Italian junk shop about 15 years ago for only 10 or 20 Euros , but not really F1 level and have no idea who it was won by as there is no online info I can find on it .

Formula Alfa Boxer ,or something ,Mugello 1994 .

IINM, that (team keeping all the trophies) is only a McLaren thing.

I stand to be corrected, but I think Williams and Ferrari kept constructors trophies but the drivers got to keep their trophies.

I think the Ferrari briefcase is cool. And the collection of JPS bomber jackets at a guide of £200 for four of them.

Not sure I’d want some sweaty overalls, no matter who’s sweat. However I did know a bloke who was proud of having a pair which he’d model down the pub once in a while (bought at auction as genuine but I cannot recall who the champion was).

Nice pension booster for Nigel.
