I have just done head gaskets on a Cerbera. When installing the front crank pully and bolt it pushes too far in and pushes up again the timing cover. What am I doing wrong?

Where are you based? Anyone local you can take it to or perhaps someone able to pop in and take a look?

Assuming you have an AJP8, here is a pic I took after removing the 'boss' on to which you bolt the aircon pulley

There should be a large washer between the bolt and the pulley

With the leading edge of the Woodruff key at 270deg, the odd bank is at TDC

The pully sticks out past the end of the crank shaft and when the bolt is tightened it pushes the pully into the timing cover and causes the engine to bind up.

I am unfortunately un able to post photos as a new member. Apparently I have full access after 14 days.

With the boss and A/C pully installed on the crankshaft the boss bottoms out against the timing cover. When this happens it leaves the A/C pully stuck out past the end of the crankshaft about 3mm. When we tighten the bolt with washer it pushes the boss inward more against the timing cover and bids up the engine. The boss binds up against the ridge where the 2 inner needle roller bearings are located. Its like the boss is 3mm too long.

Not sure if this helps but have you got the fitting attached on the rear of the pully?

When the half-time gear shaft is fitted, there is a spacer (washer) that sits on a shoulder and keeps the gear away from the crank casing.

This can fall off the shoulder when locating the shaft if you're not careful, and the whole assembly will then be the width of the washer further out from the crank case - approx 3mm. Then when you fit the timing cover the half-time gear shaft will seat first and the gasket surface of the timing cover will not sit against the crank case without tightening the bolts. The shaft bows out the centre of the timing cover and the pulley will not fit without binding.

Sounds like your problem. Ask me how I know? wink

There is gear between the crank shaft and power steering pump that drives the power steering pump. The gear runs on a shaft that has washers on either side of the gear. There is a fat washer and a thin washer. Which washer goes on which side of the gear?

Cant' remember which way round they are, however it's easy to check - all the gears should line up when fully seated in the crank case.

Found this image which indicates the thick 'thrust' washer on the front side.

Also confirmed by build manual . . .

Since you are going to remove the cam cover, you may find this useful

Sorry to steal your thread Tylersloca

BUT

I want to remove the A-C Pulley from the end of the Crank with the engine in place.

I tried to remove the 4 Allen screws which (I thought) retained it onto a Crank End surface but no luck.

1) Is it possible to remove the Crank end-bolt while still in the Chassis ?

2) If I then re-assemble any washers that exist in the set-up (but, obviously, leaving the A/C Pulley out) do you see any problems with re-assembly ?

Ta !

Don't think you can do it Paul. You might get the bolt out, but I don't think there's enough clearance to pull the pulley off without hitting the chassis cross members.

Also, the pulley holds the oil seal sleeve in place. You'd need to make up something similar to do the same job.

I'm certain that you can replace the front crank seal with the engine in situ, and I have advised people as such

I spent a lot of time trying to work out what was possible immediately after buying my car 12 years as, as my first job was to replace the head gaskets
