I’ve been doing some number crunching on replacing my 2011 X5 with a ULEZ complaint (Euro 6) X5 and the insurance is a big increase for where I live (London). Nothing I can do which is a pain and therefore I’ve come across the VW Touraeg which seems better value in the purchase price? On the flip side the road tax on the VW is about the same as my current x5 so not exactly cheap!
Has anyone owned a 2015 model Touraeg or thereabouts? I spotted this one on AT which looks a good spec and well looked after. And, it’s about £5k cheaper than the X5 I’m looking to buy!

We’ve had a 2016 Touareg for 5 years and 60k miles. It’s been totally trouble free, averages about 32 mpg in mixed use, up to 40 on a gentle motorway trip, it’s quiet and comfortable, The ride is a bit stiff for the type of car, it’s plenty quick enough but otherwise unremarkable to drive, it’s quite wide which can make car parking spaces a bit tight.
It carts family, dog and associated kit around beautifully and tows anything you hitch to the back of it with ease. I find it uninspiring and fairly dull to own but I wouldn’t be without it. I have every intention of keeping it for the foreseeable future.

I guess it depends what you want, I find them a bit cheap inside with lots of golf bits. They can throw up nox sensor faults and headlights fail. Power steering pipes fail too, we have some customers who like them and tow with them but the x5 is better built, nicer inside and has the better engine.
Father in law has a 2016 r line one.
Drives nice and has had it about 4 years now, it's done 55k miles now, this year's it's thrown a few electrical issues with the rear light clusters, cost him circa 400 for a new LED one.
Had to brakes all round discs and pads this mot and 2 new tyres which is all to be expected.
We were talking about changing it the other night and he said it does everything he needs and couldn't think what to change it for.
My only downside is the inside is like a bigger golf.
Drives nice and has had it about 4 years now, it's done 55k miles now, this year's it's thrown a few electrical issues with the rear light clusters, cost him circa 400 for a new LED one.
Had to brakes all round discs and pads this mot and 2 new tyres which is all to be expected.
We were talking about changing it the other night and he said it does everything he needs and couldn't think what to change it for.
My only downside is the inside is like a bigger golf.
Hopefully it's had the software update that makes the ad blue system work properly.

Great thanks. I’m looking at putting down a deposit for a 2015 R line. Under £20k which seems a good overall price in comparison to x5 etc.

I’d put them about the same, service wise I’d say bmw is cheaper, brake wise vw unless it has the brembo option in which case bmw is cheaper. Tyres cheaper on the vw. Things to go wrong, I’d say the bmw is slightly more reliable Hopefully cheaper servicing costs too over bmw?
I had a 2105 R-Line but didn't get on with it... Went back to Range Rover. I found the ride was stupidly firm and it actually wasn't a relaxing car to drive as a result. The Range Rover is relaxing every time you climb aboard - the Touareg never was.
It was quick enough, but IMHO VW had tried to make it too much like a 'car' to drive and not the 2 ton behemoth it actually is.... It munched brakes and tyres, had continual problems with the AdBlue system and enough electrical gremlins to be annoying. Maybe I was unlucky. Either way, the ride ultimately ruined it for me.

Thanks for post. Coming from a 4.0 D X5 I’d expect the economy to be similar if not a little better in the Touraeg. I don’t really need a 7 seat car (have 3 kids) and we’ve managed for 6 years now in the X5 (5 seater). I do hope I am not going to be disappointed with the 2015 R Line Touraeg. I just need to get on a buy a car now and stop wasting my money paying ULEZ charges! Thank you for your post. I’ve recently sat in a 2015 R Line model and it looked ok to me. I’m not expecting BMW high spec here but at the same time the Touraeg cockpit is a better space than a Seat Alahambra/VW Sharon or Ford S Max! And yes, I was considering these cars too! I’ve researched heavily into my cars and this one looks good to me. Full service history, 3 owners from new and looks in good condition overall. Can’t really better that for a budget up to £20k?! Nice to have a change from the usual black colour too! I just hope it’s not going to go wrong and cost me lots on garage bills! Are these cars that unreliable, even if they have a full service history and relatively low mileage like this on I am strongly considering?

Hmm, coming from a 2011 M Sport X5 myself I do not have the budget to buy another. They are a lot more expensive (£27.5-30k for a decent spec/mileage). My budget I’m sticking to £20k as don’t want to take out additional finance. The car I’m looking to buy has a fsh, and recent MOT. Low mileage for its age (2015) and has had a recent MOT. I guess they are both German so servicing costs will be similar. I use an independent garage near me. The Touraeg I’m planning to buy has been serviced and MOT this July so hopefully I’ll have 12-18 months pleasure and cost free driving ahead?!
