So I’m a bit thread bare on top, but I’m tired of seeing so many guys with the standard bald head and beard combo. I’ve tried that myself and hate the look of it. I don’t like having a beard at all which means I’ve generally kept my head shaved with no guard, and the face with stubble or clean shaven.

However, I’m starting to question why it is necessary to cut your hair really short just because you’re thinning on top.

Any views on just growing it long and looking as nature intended? I’m talking where you have something on top to do that with albeit not much.

If it’s any help, I came across this charming gentleman on YouTube recently.

Just that algorithm thing.

I’m not so sure I’d go for the same look?

similar situation, similar thoughts. just wondering about growing hair longer again anyway and rolling with it.
then I remember I quite like not having to give a st about what my hair looks like.
then I forget about it for a few weeks/months.
then I think about it again.

if you are totally bald on top, not on sides, I think its easier to pull off than bald mostly on top but with a little hairy island just ahead of your crown.

Just grow it out. You know it makes sense.

I get that the photos posted above are a joke, but they are all people with nil coverage on top.

Mine has receded at the temples and crown, and the remaining hair is thin, but there is generally speaking some coverage there to grow something.

Hair grows 0.5 inches per month. So in just 3 months, 1.5 inches of hair will be a big difference to zero hair.

You should try to bear in mind that a man going thin on top is not unusual.

A man going thin on top who has made himself look a dick is a bit unusual.

Throw up a pic then - you can always edit your face out if you are too handsome for the internet wink

I had a good head hair which started to go maybe late 20s early thirties. It took me a few years to finally buy some clippers and be done with it. I don’t shave my head it’s just done on the lowest setting without a guard a few times a month. I also don’t want to do the beard thing, and never wanted a beard or tash when I had hair. I Like being clean shaven but as I don’t work now I may not shave for two or three days.

I remember a a guy I worked with did the “plug” thing, seemed to work to an extent but really .. no.. not for me,

Well just grow it then and if you like it then all's well isn't it? And if you don't like it you know what to do.

No issue with cutting hair short, or leaving as is if you’re going bald.

Issue is the people who are going bald, but try and hide it with comb overs, or ropey hair styles which highlight even more they are bald.

I'm all for doing exactly what you like with your appearance. If anyone doesn't like the look of it, it's their problem rather than yours. Of course it's possible to make yourself look so objectionable that people distance themselves from you, but if it's just a hair style we're talking about and not tattooed eyeballs, then that's unlikely.

For the record, my manager is quite thin on top but has a beard, long hair and a ponytail and wears rock music tee-shirts and black leather jackets to the office. It's a certain look and it suits him very well. He's both very well respected and well liked by his team, the company and our customers.

You could take it further with the ZZTop/Lee Sklar look (coincidentally has just recorded a great interview with Rick Beato). Lee has played as a session bassist on thousands of great albums and is well known for playing live with the likes of James Taylor, Carole King, Phil Collins and Toto to name a few and nobody would dare take the piss.

I'm thinning on top so I just use clippers, keep it moderately short, sometimes it grows to nearly an inch but I generally keep it to about half an inch. As for my hair...

biggrin

I guess I've got better things to worry about. There's someone at my tennis club who was thinning on top and he spent around £2k to sort it out. I mean, it looks fine but I'd rather spend £2k on something else.

I think you need to take time trying out a few different things to find out what you actually prefer. It took me a while. Consider a hat that's appropriate - the type of hat is your choice.

I shave my head once a week with a Gillette razor. With the grain then against it. Prepping it properly with a hot towel etc for a wet shave prevents irritation plus the skin toughens up over time. I prefer it to any electronic device as it's a clean cut with no fuzz.

With my facial hair I go through cycles. I prefer stubble but it's a pain in the arse to trim it evenly. So I just grow it out til I get bored of styling it or it looks patchy, then shave it off and start over every few weeks or months.

Late 30s.

The poster about the guy with the musician look made me think.

I now dress like a typical middle class dad of my age. Sometimes I wear a suit for work if not WFH. I’m not sure how well an unconventional hair style will suit me. I guess we’ll know in a few months.

My main issue with growing it back in is that until you get to a point you’re happy with you’re going to look like you have radiation poisoning.

I had long hair for years but have kept it clipped since I started noticeably thinning.

I could see me going back to having some hair at some point but I can’t be bothered with it just now.

Just imo, I think a shaved head looks better when you’re younger but as you get older thinning hair looks a bit less sad.

As a baldy this hasn’t been the kind of uplifting thread I was hoping for.

I was thinning a lot around the crown area early 30’s and getting thin on top in general. Tried to keep my normal hairstyle, got the nickname baldy at football. Eventually I took the plunge and clippered it all over, not too short but instantly felt better. Now I clipped it short once a week and like the look.

Baldness is a fact of life, nothing you can do about it unless you want to pay lots of money to get it fixed. Embrace it and it will be fine. You don’t need to go for the Terry Savalas look, but you can crop it shorter and no one will care. A few of my mates are thinning (41) and just go for a shorter cut and get on with life.
