Hello all,

I'm looking at purchasing a moderately expensive car soon, around £40k, and I'm looking for any tips I should keep in mind for spending such a large sum of money.

I'm aware that, over £30k, you have no Section 75 protection, so I am right in thinking there is no benefit to paying a deposit on a credit card? I already know my bank account requires me to visit a branch to transfer money over £25k, so other than perhaps sending £1 initially to the account details to verify I've got them right, is there anything else I should know?

I would be buying a car from a manufacture dealership so it won't be somewhere disreputable.

It sounds like you are planning on buying with cash? You are likely to get a better deal by taking finance and then paying it off right away as the dealer will have incentives to sell as much finance as possible. You can pay the finance off fairly easily by card/bank transfer which removes any bank issues

As above if you're buying from a main dealer you're probably better of taking the finance & all the incentives & once the deal is done you can clear the finance.

Some of the worst imo.

Best getting the car independently inspected for best peace of mind but still not 100%

At least with a main dealer you’re covered by a better warranty should the worst happen, though the RAC platinum warranty i have on 3 supercars and they’ve all paid up on separate claims with no hassle whatsoever, LR warranty? not so straight forward, so i’m inclined to use dealers that have an RAC relationship built over years..
