Need Help with Getting Next Car

Hello,

I have a 2010 Kia Soul which I bought not so long ago. There is nothing wrong with it, I'm just looking at other car options as a daily driver. So far I'm interested in two other cars. I have the pros and cons listed below. I don't wish to spend more than £2500. They are all similarly priced.

Kia Soul 2010 (Current)
Mileage: 90k
Diesel/Manual
50mpg Avg
Practical in daily use
Tax: £180
Insurance: £750
Reliability: Okayish, AC got clapped and now a turbo pipe leak.

Mileage: 90k
Petrol/Auto
35mpg Avg
Classic, value will only go up. Barebones tech, manual wind up windows.
Tax: £325
Classic insurance: £350
Reliability: I know this car is tough but as a daily 30 year old car?

Renault Laguna Coupe 2011
Mileage: 100k
Diesel/Manual
50mpg Avg
Nicest to look at, most tech inside, seems the most luxurious.
Tax: £180
Insurance: £700
Reliability: I'm not so sure, any guidance on this?

Surely it's worth seeing if the Kia is an economical repair (that is, <£2500) rather than splashing out buying what is effectively an unknown car (with all the uncertainty that that brings)?

Also, you don't say what you need the car for (family, dogs, commute to work on your own etc.) so making a sensible recommendation is near impossible absent some basic information.

What made you settle on the choices you shared (I'm struggling with the logic).

I commute daily 40 miles for work. Repairs isn't really an issue as I'm quite handy with a spanner. I'm also not selling the Kia because its giving me problems. I can repairs them as well as issues with the other cars I get.

I like to change cars quite a bit. I've owned a bunch of Hondas, the one Honda I haven't ever owned is an accord, let alone a CB3 shape. The Renault Laguna is only a consideration because I like the look of the car and its mpg is as good as the Kia. I don't have Kids or a Dog, its just me and my Mrs. I also have another Honda Civic which fills in the practicality side.

I know very little (read nothing) of this part of the market but I'd imagine that you won't go far wrong by picking something Japanese-- Nissan Micra or Honda Jazz owned by a pensioner would probably fit the bill, they're essentially bullet proof (don't test that).

Go onto the Shed thread and ask Bearman for details on the Laguna - I believe he has about 10 in his fleet and can give you a lot of background on which are the better spec, most reliable engine codes and things to watch out for etc.

OP does the 'Classic' policy on the Honda cover your fairly high mileage?

Those Renault Laguna Coupes do look really good and they're rare, so extra kudos for that.

The 2.0 diesels have a good reputation, and a chain as well.

I understand they're not the best drivers cars but, who cares, they look great, economical and will drive well enough.

Would be my choice.

Just for the novelty value of a good looking coupe in a world of dreary SUVs I’d give the Laguna a go. Always gawp at them when seeing them around, rare car.
