Stelvio or ipace

Currently wife drives a volvo xc40, lease is coming to an end.
2 cars she likes the look of and is open to swapping to the jag ipace or alfa stelvio.
Both very different options I know
Also first child is on the way so if anyone has either and knows if the isofix leg fits well in either would be good to know.
Or do we extend the xc40 lease?

The ipace is excellent and probably the best EV still. My mate used isofix with no issues.
Ive not driven the Stelvio but sat in a few before I got a Guilia. They are spacious and reasonably practical. Reviews indicate they are best in class as a drivers car.
The decision depends on other stuff.
Can you plug in at home? If not , avoid EV.
What engine in the Stelvio?
If not the QV or Veloce go ipace.

You'll get more meaningful feedback with a few more details, for example annual mileage, typical usage (short or long trips), ability to install a home charger etc.

My brother has had an iPace for almost 4 years now (Oct 19 car) and loves it, does around 12k p.a. including plenty of longer journeys which require a charge up.

We have a home charger already from the previous owner. Don't think charging will be an issue tbh

No brainer then - iPace. If you've not already tested one you'll be surprised how fast they are; plus they are good looking, have a quality feeling interior and handle well.

Had a Stevlio for 3 weeks in Italy 2 years ago on a skiing trip. Room in the back for 3 cases. 2 kids seats in isofix. Was only the 2.2 diesel, but had enough poke on the motorway. Only issue was the EML came on when we left Milan, however rit went back out on the way back to the airport, I assume it was an Alfa thing.

iPace. 10,000 problem free miles in mine. Looks good. Handles and rides surprisingly well. Good build quality (Magna Steyr). Very fast. And very cheap at the moment.

Just checked auto trader and ipaces now at around £20k. Wow.

They gave me an iPace as a courtesy car when my F-Pace SVR went in for servicing and, I have to say, I was properly impressed even comparing directly with my SVR. When I saw the other day that iPaces are down into the mid 20k price range I was seriously tempted!

Not driven an ipace so can’t comment on that, but did run a Stelvio for 3 years, 28k miles. Brilliant car, great to drive, 100% reliable. Ours was the Nero edition so only the 200bhp petrol version, but never once felt underpowered. They do remap to 315bhp if you so desired (engine is same as the 280bhp version).
Only real downside was that the economy wasn’t great, sub 30mpg unless on a long motorway run. Oh, and the 9k miles service intervals, but I had a service pack from alfa so 3 services were about £495 so not too bad.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but there are many known issues and faults and you then you have the dealers......

I would not be putting a wife and child in it

This from a JLR employee:

New levels of Jag JLR incompetence.
Love the I-PACE but not worth the JLR hassle anymore.
3 times tried to get the gearbox fault wiring loom fix done but Jaguar Northampton didn’t have the time every time it’s been in.
It finally fails, 3 days to get it collected and courtesy car delivered. When it was collected they sent 2 AA flat beds??? Car delivered 3 hours after they said it would be, then waiting in for the deliverer to come back and get his stuff he left in the car.
Cars already booked into a rebooked apt inNorthampton on the 12th August but Northampton can’t take it as a a recovery so it goes to MK who can’t fix it till end of September and JLR have said they can’t move it to Northampton for its rebooked appointment because they don’t move repair cars once they get to a site. Apparently if I had told JLR all this they would have taken it somewhere else for repair, although it was JLR who phoned me to tell me all the details I apparently needed to tell them. (Some kind of JLR paradox I think)
I can complain to Jag Customer relations but they close at 3pm (obviously as being open at convenient times would be good customer relations)
Lease will be up before the car can be fixed.


1/2/21 UPDATE
So ive had an eventful morning so far.
Call the garage and they said I had to call Jaguar assistance.
I pressed the button in the car for that and nobody answered.
I called the dealer to tell them and they put me through to Jag assistance, who didn't answer!
So I called the local dealer where I keep taking it to say I was on my way down and to get the courtesy car sorted.
I've been here maybe an hour now.
They can't deal with me without speaking to Jaguar assistance. So they called them to explain the situation and asked them to call me, from being stood outside the dealers due to covid.
Somebody called me and asked me to bring them to speed. After that, she said I couldn't have a courtesy car until it had been diagnosed as the fault.
There are only certain technicians that can work on the Electric cars and they don't have one available, but can see the problem is there.
So at the minute, we are at a stand off... the dealer want to give me the courtesy car and take my car, but the system says they can't.
Now they are saying because I drove the car to the dealer.. if I call the Jaguar assistance button now, they won't come out because I drove it knowing there was a fault.
They suggested I got a taxi home and called from there.
Still waiting for something to be sorted.
I have a 2 week old baby at home! I do not need this car taking up so much of my time!!!

30/1/21 update.
Got the car back and it's still broken!!!

Little update on my car.
Briefly. It broke down 4 days from new. Lost charge. Cut out on the motorway late at night in fog with no hard shoulder! My 35 week pregnant Girlfriend had to jump over the barrier. It's was 0°.
Took 10 days for them to get the car into a garage.
They then had the car 4 weeks.
I also mentioned to them a noise from the suspension. The shock was leaking and was replaced.
So I get the car back after 4 weeks, being told its been fixed and tested and I'm good to go.
1 day I had the car!
It wouldn't charge.
They took the car (after some fun and games) and 5 days later I had an email saying the part was in and being fixed that day. Then they would run some tests to make sure its charging.
That was a week ago. Heard nothing since dispute me calling and emailing them.
So enough is enough. I've asked to hand the car back.
Arval is the lease company I got the car from. I work for JLR and the lease was a salary reduction scheme.
Arval say its nothing to do with them, I need to speak to JLR HR
Just had an email back from HR to say there is nothing they will do but fix my car in due course. If I want to hand it back, it will be subject to the fees associated with ending a lease early even if the car was perfect.
So now it looks like I'll have to take legal advice.
I have said I would be happy to have the car replaced with another I pace, but I'm not happy to keep that one.

It’s funny, these (always) second hand tropes are rolled out and seem to gain some common folk wisdom.

I have no doubt - like every other modern car - there are issues.

However, I’ve been driving JLR product for 11 years as our family daily (Disco/RRS/FFRR), covering well over 200k miles across 4 cars (new one en route). Not only have they been great, they’ve had nil issues. Nil.

Weirdly though, I’ve used about 5 different JLR dealers for a variety of location-related issues and they’ve all been great. Honestly. Great.

How have I been so lucky?

I’m no JLR pervert either - have used Alfa (mixed), Porsche (poor), Mercedes (excellent), VW (efficient but annoying) and BMW (ste) dealers during this time.

iPace is a good car and the dealers are fine - buy what you want x

I was surprised by how good it is. And I come from long line of Porsche, Audi and BMW.
Indeed the worst cars I have had were the Audis (C7 RS6 and B9 RS4). About 25k warranty claims over 6 years and 80k miles (mostly DRC suspension). Followed closely by a 911 (new engine). BMW? Not even a squeak or rattle over 100k.
But one swallow doesn’t make a summer..

I think the dealer is part of the problem - if you get a good dealer life is great, a poor one and you’re screwed.

I’d never buy a Jag again after the issues I had with the dealer and my XKR 15 years ago. Sworn off the brand forever due to pettiness from the dealer.

I couldn’t recommend the local Porsche dealer enough, had an absolutely wonderful experience with them and would quite happily buy one of their vehicles again if they fitted my requirements and budget.

Our local Mercedes dealer start off poor but recent experience has changed the opinion slight so they get a pass too.

I do like the look of the Stelvio.

But I would be going for the iPace,

I’ve been seriously impressed with mine, certainly the most complete car I’ve ever owned in its range of abilities. Comfy, very fast, and practical, and come winter it will be great if we get snow too.

Build quality wise, it’s absolutely fantastic, even with the panoramic roof, there’s not a single rattle, and I tend to pick them up! Mine only has the imitation leather, but it’s nice enough. I would have liked the full leather, and no rattles from the dash.

The infotainment is a bit laggy, but I tend to use Apple car play most of the time so that’s not an issue. Iva had mine since march, and have had no issues yet… apart from the recall.

I seem to be getting 220-230 miles at the moment, as I do tend to use the performance most of the time..

I only charge at home due to my milage, and on OVO charge anytime tariff, having a car with this performance that costs peanuts to run is lovely to have.

I’ve only encountered my local dealership (listers droitwich) once for the event recall, I was very impressed with them.

I would recommend a warranty though, or the Jaguar assistance, where the technician can come out to you.

We have a 1 and 4 year old, it easily fits the isofix, and a normal belt rear facing seat. And the various bits and bobs they require..

I would recommend the Air suspension if you can find one with it. And the panoramic roof, even with a black interior, it really brightens it up.
