iDrive issue

I have a 2016 2 series Gran Tourer.
The iDrive is playing up: it is in a constant cycle of resetting every 30 seconds or so. It can be used for those few seconds.
I thought this would be a software glitch but hasn't sorted itself over a few days. The system isn't live long enough to use a usb drive to update/reinstall the software.
I mentioned it to my local bmw specialist and asked if they would reinstall software with their plug in tech whilst it was in for MOT and they immediately mentioned replacing the idrive hardware. Does anyone have any experience of a fault like this and know if it can be sorted without an expensive replacement?

The headunit needs a reflash, there are quite a few companies that offer this service.

Disconnect the battery for 5 mins and see if that resets it? Nothing to lose.

Thanks for the comments. Any issues with codes etc leaving the battery disconnected for a while? Have looked at reflashing services, struggling to find anything nearby! Bizarrely lots of the advertised services seem to involve removing hardware and shipping it internationally.
I'm in Shropshire if anyone has any suggestions.

I pulled the fuse and left it for 20mins, no improvement. Will explore reflash options.
