Insuring Woofy, 4 times more expensive than my car!

Thought it was time Woof Woof was insured. I nearly always watch SuperVet, so when he was on the TV advertising PetPlan, I thought it looked a good bet. Here's the quote:-

Depending on how old Super Woof is you might be better off paying a similar amount into an ISA every month and hoping for the best?

That's not much less a month than I pay for full Bupa coverage & I'm not young. Stick £150 a month into an ISA as suggested.

That's exactly what I do for my four. Mostly because we can't actually get them insured at all but also because pet insurance has gotten stupidly expensive in recent years.

Our vets run a "pet club" that covers vaccinations, routine check ups, nail clipping and minor injuries (cut paw etc) which costs £12 per month (worth seeing if your vets do similar) all of our animals are on the pet club plan.

A set amount each month is put into savings. We've used the fund twice for emergencies, there's £8k in there so far. We'll stop adding to it at £10k. If we ever have to use it, well just start putting in again.

That seems incredible.

I have PP Covered for Life Classic+ (up to £7k vets fees per year) for my 1 year old lurcher and it's £31 per month.

Yes, of course, and for the present. She's only 2yrs old at the moment. My friend's dog got hit by a car last week. That cost £1500.

also some types of policy only cover a condition for 12 months or value then its wiped off, even if it comes back some where else, check for condition for life policies rather than life time

I adopted a 9 year old black lab and a 11 year old Staffie last year, I could just about afford cover but it got more and more expensive. If they break a leg or become ill I will have to be very pragmatic about things, but that is easy to say now! I just try my best to keep them out of harms way not jumping down out of the car or anything stupid. Neither are easy dogs, the lab will only sleep in our room or she barks, and wakes at 4am for food and pesters us all day for meals. The Staffie is a good girl but poops at night whatever we seem to do. Wouldn't be without them though!
