Carry the correct sized plate in the boot.

IIRC (and hopefully a TrafPol will confirm) as long as you CAN put on the correct plates you are not committing an offence.....So keep them in the boot along with a screwdriver (that way you can have a nice drink whilst you change the plates ....)

That has to be wrong.

Thats like saying its not illegal to be doing 130 on the motorway as you could have done 70 if you wanted to.

You might get away with having a full size plate in the boot if you dont have one at all on the front but if you get caught with a 3/4 size one on the car (as I have ) I think your done.

Not having the correct size number plate is technically not having a number plate fitted at all!! And that is the offence you will get ticketed for.
I get this a lot with my bikes (not so far with the Liz), plod just love pulling me, undersize plate sir, ticket, get the "old plate" re-fitted, and repeat ad finitum.
However Plod are getting a little less tolerant each time though, need them revolving plates aka Bond on the DB5
