nice end to our hols
Discussion
Just got home from a bike blatt round europe to find some thieving T:censored:t has blown £4,500 of my grumpys bank balance(well there is no balance now and we are seriously overdrawn)all blown on internet gambling!! G spent most of yesterday sorting new cards etc, nice end to a great hol!!!!:furious:
The bank doesn't know, we used the card in France in a secure bank area and after that we weren't able to get money out, can only presume it was cloned! odd bit is the gambling was done on a UK site!We are covered but its the hassle of D/D, new cards etc all due to take 2 weeks to sort.
Roo,
Really sorry to hear that - I can imagine how pissed off he is having had my cards stolen a few years ago.
The bank should re-imburse his account though this may be only after they've finished they're own investigations.

Even though it’s a serious PITA at least it sounds as though you are covered for the financial loss.
FWIW I would recommend an emergency account to anyone. Just open a current account with any major bank, other than your usual one, and put £1,000.00 or so of your savings in there ICE. You should never ever use the account but at least there are easy to access funds to tide you over should you find someone has fraudulently stripped your usual account(s) and maxed your CC.

Sorry to learn of your woes, Rooster. It's rife in the States. And it' done a lot by your "friendly" waiter.
It's always amazed me that absolutely no one makes any attempt to verify your signature in the US - in most places they swipe the card and hand it back to you *before* you sign. So you could use anybody's card (that wasn't blocked). The CC companies must lose a fortune in the US?

this was a building soc card and we hadn't used it for anything but the bank machine in France. Still think it must have been cloned in the UK because the beting was done thru a well know UK betting agency. Its just SO annoying! and £4,500 is a lot of money!
If it's done on an internet casino, they all insist that any winnings go back onto the card first before a cheque etc is sent out, which has to go to the registered address - well they always used to. I haven;t played on one for a few years but thats how they used to do it, so it was pointless using stolen cards.
It's just a shame they didn;t win......
You could have come home to a 16k credit balance.... which was nice...
Seriously though, it's odd when I hear about this - I don; see what the criminal could gain from it, however I suppose maybe they didnt read the small print and just chanced it. The casino will log the IP address etc for the session, however I doubt anyone will chase it. The Casino will still get paid, the CC company will fork out and that will be it - I suspect. Can anyone clarify?
The good thing is you say you will get your money back - it's a sh
it but at least you get it back. Cheers,
JC

The Casino won't get paid. The money will be clawed back as it was the Casino that was defrauded, not the bank and not credit card company.
A Policeman told me the ins and outs of card fraud and why the UK (and EU) are the best places to be if it happens. Whether hes right or not I don't know but it sounded good. Anyway, he goes:
Your card is merely a device that gets money out of a machine or convinces a merchant to give you the goods. Your card is not a device that unlocks your bank account. Only YOU as the card holder with the card can unlock the contents of YOUR bank account. If you are not with the card or you haven't authorised the purchase the fraud is against the ATM machine or the merchant. They are the ones defrauded by the fake card.
At the end of the day it is the machine or the merchant that is defrauded and not you.
That should be why its simply a case of phoning the bank and reporting it when you see whats happened. They do their due care and attention bit and refund the money. In some banks they have a spare stack of cash that they use to refund you whilst they process the case as that can take several weeks.
I paid for a meal last year and because the machine "wasn't working very well" and was taking "some time to process transactions this evening" the staff said "we'll hold onto the card and bring it to the table when its gone through".
I replied - "no you won't - you'll put the card through now and I'll take the card to the table. when the slip is ready to be signed I will show you the card". I took my card and sat down at my table again.
No way do I ever let my card leave my sight again after having £600 removed from it 2 years ago.

Sorry to hear about this, as a further word of warning, this happened to a friend of mine a couple of years ago with a CC. He stopped the card and the CC company suspended the balance whilst they went through the checks. He then got a phone call (he had an ex-directory number) from someone purporting to be from the CC company saying that his payment was overdue and could he give them another CC or Debit C number "as a gesture of good faith" so that they could take a payment towards the account!!! He twigged pretty quickly and refused and when he phoned the CC they had no record of a call and their system clearly showed the account was suspended.
What a blooming cheek though!! Someone obvously had his details as well as having cloned the card and thought they'd have another go!
