Hey everyone,
Just looking for some advice. I recently bought an e90 330d m57.
All is going well except a whining sound which started this morning. My worry is that the turbo is on its way out. It’s still under warranty so should be covered if so but it’s a pain. The sound is audible at 2k rpm and above and when it rolls back down the rev range. It’s an auto box so could also maybe be the tranny but not sure. Any ideas?

I would check the tensioner pulley and idler pulley first. Pop the belt off and feel if the bearings are rough. Easy fix if so.

If it's under warranty; take it back & get them to look the car over/sort the issue

Don't try to self diagnose or take it anywhere else as they may use that to get out of any warranty work...

It could be all sorts (alternator, box, turbo, bearings, belts/pulleys etc); they'll soon find what's what

I definitely agree that I should go back for a check over. However silly old me bought a car from a dealership 2 counties over so I will get a second opinion from someone I trust and then decide. I know what these dealerships can be like and if I can be certain something needs doing before I venture back there, I’ll feel a bit more confident in fighting my corner if they try to get out of it.

I have sent a video with the sound to the dealership and they claim it’s normal. I beg to differ lol.

Thanks for the responses, I do appreciate

Is the pitch of the sound linked to RPM, road speed, anything like that?

One trick for working out where noises are coming from - a bit of washer tubing stuck in your ear makes for a crude stethoscope to help isolate the location of particular sounds.

No; take it back to them. Don't do anything that can compromise what they need to do (ie sort any issues that are found), unless you agree to get an independent inspection done
