Anyone know Atlanta, GA?

I'm looking at a weekend in Atlanta with a mate in late Sept, early Oct. Anyone know the city well enough to make some suggestions on areas, bars, restaurants, music venues for two fifty somethings? Neither interested in sport. Like better restaurants, micro breweries.

I hear Buckhead is a good area. We're flying in from Charleston SC so getting around will be Uber or the public transport system. So, ideas on areas to stay would be appreciated.

There's a bar in an old church from memory but it's in a sketchy area

Then in the business area there's some nice bars/restaurants but I can't remember the name of the place now. Has underground parking, brand shops on ground floor and bars on the upper level

Like most American cities, everything is spaced out so there's no real bar hopping scene as such. It'll just be a couple of bars in each area.

I lived in Alpharetta for a few years and would stay out of central Atlanta unless you are going to the theatre. I would go to Buckhead as a previous poster suggested.
Lots of things to do in the area. MLK is very good, Stone mountain, Amicalola falls, Lake Lanier.
As for bars, you'll get a lot of craft beer and much of it is very good. Its widely available

specific places will have changed in the 5 years since I left

In all honesty, I would go to one of the local cities like Woodstock, Alpharetta, Roswell

Very briefly, I visit that part of the world regularly.

• Drive it, don't fly it.
• About 5 hrs drive from Charleston to Atlanta
• Go cross country, not on the interstate via Columbia.
• It's a fascinating drive with little traffic so you'll have a good average speed and a shorter journey
• Yes, you'll be on the Interstate from Augusta to Atlanta
• There's not a lot in Augusta but a decent riverside walk and a statue of famous musician James Brown
• Best of all, you'll already have the car with you to travel in and around Atlanta
• In central Atlanta visit the Coca Cola museum and the CNN television centre. They're very close together.
• Outside Atlanta visit Stone Mountain, you can do it on your way in from Charleston or on your way back to Charleston.
• If you like theme parks check out Six Flags Over Georgia. They have a massive, old-school wooden roller-coaster. Astounding.
• Charleston has sea breeze - Atlanta doesn't. It can be extremely hot in summer.

• Avoid rush hour traffic anywhere near Atlanta! At least a 25 mile radius.

• You will meet a lot of dark skinned people - this is the African American capital of USA. The accent can be hard to fathom at times especially if you're off the beaten track.

Chicago has like 25,000 bars and restaurants and everything is walking distance

(Granted most other US cities are as you describe)!

I lived there a long time ago now, i used to enjoy bobbing about on lake lanier, you have road atlanta race circuit and a large oval circuit also for some racing.

Catch a baseball game at the atlanta braves, a top MLB team, always a great atmosphere and very American.

Atlanta has expanded enormously since i lived there, traffic in the city area was horrific even then, so avoid rush hour.
