Outback replacement

Afternoon all, I’m a long term Subaru fan, and bought a very low mileage 69 plate Outback at the end of last year, which I intended to keep for 10 or so years. Life seems to have got in the way of that plan, as yesterday it was involved in an accident and I think there’s a reasonable chance it’ll be written off.

Currently I can’t see any Outbacks that meet my requirements, so thought I’d cast the net further, my requirements are:

4x4
Reliable
Quiet comfy ride
Plenty of cargo space
28 grand or less
High ground clearance and preferably high driving position (probably the only thing I didn’t like about the outback was it’s fairly low stance despite the good clearance)

Anyone got any thoughts? Residuals and mpg aren’t really issues.

As another ex-Outback owner who also really liked mine I think a Rav4 is going to be the closest thing, e.g.:

I went from an older Outback to a Volvo XC70 which was about the closest thing to a more modern equivalent I could find at the time for my budget. When it comes to change again I may well go for a Land Cruiser. I would have suggested that here but as they hold their value insanely well - £28k only gets you a circa 10-year old/100k mile one - an approved used Rav4 looks a better bet.

A Forester is on your shortlist, presumably... that would be where I'd look first if Outbacks are thin on the ground.

Other than that, I'd maybe look at a Lexus RX. The RX doesn't have the hugest boot, so if the standard one isn't big enough you'd need to look for an RX L, which are rarer.

Thanks everyone, V90CC looks good, and is something I considered when I got this Outback, but for the same money they’re slightly older/higher miles which isn’t ideal as I plan to keep it for ages.

A Forester certainly is on the list, but I’ve had them before and found the cargo space slightly too small, but I think they’re bigger now, and higher than the outback, so,I’ve found a decent one locally that I’ll have a look at.

The Lexus and rav4 just dont do it for me, but I’ll try and see them in the flesh before discounting them.

Surely you can find another Outback, even if it means travelling for it? They're fairly common here in Aberdeenshire although most of the owners do tend to keep them indefinitely.

I tried to move into an Outback and it was a real problem - anything that came up disappeared very quickly. Had to stay with XC70s as it was going to take too long to find what we wanted.

Had a call this morning and it’s good news. It’s all fixable, so I’m very happy I’ll be getting it back.
