Lamborghini Gallardo Valentino Balboni | Spotted

The Gallardo is celebrating its 20th birthday - time to find the best of the bunch

It’s 2003. Lamborghini is five years into Audi ownership and has already introduced a new V12 flagship in the form of the Murcielago, following on from the vastly improved Diablo VT 6.0. Though the performance car market was thriving at the time – and a global recession was still a long way over the horizon - the Italian marque knew it needed a more attainable model to help fund its twelve-cylinder halo car and keep its new owners off its back. The result was, of course, the V10-powered Gallardo.

That’s right, it’s been 20 years since the Gallardo made its debut, taking back the ‘baby Lambo’ tag from the very ‘80s and very dorky Jalpa. A name you may well have forgotten, because the brand shifted naff all of them. The Gallardo, mind, was a smash hit from the get-go. Lamborghini sold over 14,000 examples over the car’s ten-year lifespan, some 10,000 more than the Murcielago, comfortably cementing it as the firm’s best-selling model at the time.

It’s not hard to see why the Gallardo was such a success. A mid-mounted naturally aspirated V10 with 500hp in launch spec, a manual gearbox (though the optional e-Gear was by far the preferred option in period) and all-wheel drive for the grand sum of £120,000 was unheard of. Yes, the Ferrari 360 and F430 were arguably more driver-focused, but what set the Gallardo apart was its ability to deliver all the sensations and sounds of a supercar while offering a degree of usability. And because the whole thing had been overseen by Audi, there was a chance it wouldn’t spontaneously combust.

The question is, with so many revisions and special editions released over a decade-long production run, which was the best? The original has aged magnificently and is probably the easiest way to nab a manual, while the runout LP 570-4 Super Trofeo is perhaps the most bonkers model short of the track-only Sesto Elemento. But if you’re after the most complete Gallardo there is, look no further than this glorious LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni.

Named after the company’s longstanding test driver, the Balboni edition is essentially a greatest hits compilation of the Gallardo range. The 550hp, 5.2-litre V10 from the facelifted model, plus bespoke suspension and steering, made the Balboni the most driver-centric Gallardo of the lot. It was also the first rear-wheel drive Lamborghini since the Diablo, shedding some 30kg – most of which was stripped from the nose. With power no longer going to the front axle, the limited-slip diff was given a retune to handle the extra grunt being sent to the back, while a tweaked ESC allowed for more rear-end slip. This wasn’t the return of the widow-maker Lamborghinis of previous eras; it was the most rewarding Gallardo of them all.

Given that the Balboni is probably the best Gallardo there is, it’s a shame there aren’t that many to go around. Just 250 were produced and they oh so rarely appear on the PH classifieds. This is currently the only one for sale at the moment, so good thing it looks to be a peach. Okay, so it’s an e-Gear model, but on the plus side, it has been signed by Mr. Balboni himself, which just oozes cool. The price tag reads £120,000, too, which doesn't seem bad at all given how rare and revered it is. Still a lot for a birthday present, mind, but it’s hard to think of a better way to mark the Gallardo’s 20th lap around the sun.

I always thought this model was a 3 pedal manual only, and I didn't realise that you could get it with only 2 pedals.

Fabulous thing, it is kind of an affordable supercar - but still way out of my league sadly.
I have been drooling over a Swedish reg basic Gallardo convertible parked in full sun on a street near where I live. The thought of the hood fabric drying out and the paint fading, makes me shudder!

A special edition Lamborghini asking less than its new list price?! Someone needs to have a word with that dealer, as they’re doing it all wrong!

That is lovely btw

Nice, but I would rather like a Superleggera, best with a manual, but otherwise something like this one, I love such interior, all that alcantara, the seats and the carbon and ow lighter.

Yep, that’ll do for me. Always liked the Gallardo, price for this one less than I thought for a such a rare variant if I’m honest too. Hefty maintenance aside you’d surely lose nothing in depreciation on this? #Manmaths laugh

Come 2013, I was really dissappointed there wasn't a De Cecco Rigatoni edition.

Hopefully they consider it for the Revuelto.

When my wife and I chatted after watching the ‘Lamborghini’ movie, we asked ourselves: ‘What don’t they make, what won’t they make, but what can you still buy that gives you the feel of what they ‘used’ to make’… (Before cars turned into giant iPads)

Criteria being amongst: Manual, normally aspirated, rear wheel drive, sounds like ‘something’…

We seriously looked at the Gallardo, in a manual.

The only thing I couldn’t get past was the ‘keeping it on the road’ question, with costs / service / warranty…

In the end, we bought a GT4 - we could have easily bought a Gallardo tho…

Bravo to you if you do :-))

Bravo indeed & enjoy it..!

Quite why I have an Alcantara thing I don't know but it is just soo right!! It is great to touch, is cool in summer and warm in winter and you don't slide, yet for decades we have had to have cow on premium vehicles.

Alcantara is such a versatile and nice material, yet instead of it becoming a lovely choice for those seeking a move away from leather - we get fake leather - which like a fake sausage is horrid! (I am a vegetarian just to be open). I looked at a car today and was told of animal free leather - nope that's vinyl to this child of the '60s!!

So yes - I love the Gallardo and the idea of the Balboni appeals so much - but Alcantara - wribble...

(I've been assembling IKEA wardrobes today so my mind may be a bit odd - sorry)

Interesting, and a classic example of each to their own, but I can’t stand Alcantara and actively avoid it whenever possible.

Back on topic, Balboni definitely the most desirable Gallardo though. Lovely thing.

Sooo close to perfect! What a shame it's an e-gear.....

Apparently the LP550-2 is mechanically the same thing? But I would much rather have a "Balboni". I'm surprised this isn't worth much more.

Did they make an SL with a manual box? Thought it was e-gear only..

Love the Gallardo of any spec... crazy/uniquely Lambo looks but don't seem to have aged at all (the Murcielago despite its similar'ish styling I think looks far more dated now, as do Ferraris of a similar era).
