I generally do a lot of service work on my own cars; unless it involves stripping the engine, I'll have a go at it.

To that end, how good is access in the S2 to the various bits of the engie? Things like the belts & tensioners, filters, plugs, etc? Do they have proper jacking points? Are the clutch and gearbox assemblies easy enough to get to?

And how tight is the bay around the Honda engine? Especially interested in what the supercharger does to access to all the bits too?

Any pics would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

I've found that one of the most annoying things on the car is that no matter what you do, you need to take off the undertrays (both the back two if you're draining the oil from a K-series).

You're always gonna break a clip off too!

Other than that, access on the K is slightly difficult because of the engine's location (i.e. no matter what you do you have to lean over into the bay to get to it!).

You shouldn't have to remove both rear trays for an oil change on a K series - just the middle one.

The one covering the exhausts can stay on.

Just checking, but you mention Honda engines and superchargers - I presume you realise S2's come from Lotus with either Rover K-series or Toyota power depending on model? (normally aspirated in both cases with the exception of the sold-out limited edition 240R).

There are conversions to drop in Honda engines with or without superchargers that seem very well sorted. There always seems to be a healthy debate about what engine is best in an Elise!

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious!

Anyway, back to your original question, there is quite a bit of room in the engine bay around my Toyota engine, and everything looks like it would be pretty accessible, though I've not had to fiddle with it myself yet as the car is still in warranty.

Hey Chris,

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting either a cheaper 2nd hand stock/111S and fitting the supercharged Honda engine (K20A), or getting a 111R... once I have my permission slip signed by the misses at any rate

Good to know the Toyota engine fits easily, I was a bit worried it world be more cramped in there than the K-series.

K is no problem to DIY most bit's, only hard service item is the cam-belt as the bottom pulley is close to the side rail.

Honda's are as easy, if not easier as no cam belt to change.
