For my 18 year old daughter.
Budget up to 150/200.

We saw a goodman 65on in an antiques store for 130, but have no idea if good or not etc.

Thanks for any help.

A Yamaha or a Fender would be good guitars to start with.
Go into a guitar shop and try a few out (and don't get forced into buying one).

If it's a real Goodman, that's an absolute bargain, and the seller doesn't know what he has. Do you have a photo?

I suspect it's not though...

I have always gone for better quality second hand acoustics - better value for money! If you want new then yes, the Yamaha F370 as above certainly fits the bill.

I bought a Cort Earth 200 for my daughter and can't believe how good it is. Good craftsmanship, Grover tuners, lovely action and a lovely, full sound. And I only paid £30 for it with a case and instruction books and dvds. It's second hand of course but absolutely mint condition.

Yep a good s/h is excellent vfm but like cars caveat emptor! One needs to be clued up and maybe tooled up re wear and tear, neck straightness / action, cracks etc the list goes on. I had a dealer try and sell me a lovely And expensive guitar with a well but discernible repaired crack.

Agreed. If the OP knows someone with a bit of knowledge he can take along to give it a once-over, or alternatively, a trusted an honest dealer to advise. I always enjoy any excuse to visit a guitar emporium music

Yamaha the obvious choice I would say. I picked up a F310 for £50 in the late 90s and it stood me in good stead for years. Fender acoustic in the 150-200 bracket perfectly reasonable, but not as good as Yamaha.

As the guitar I play the most now, I’d highly recommend the Ibanez Talman electro acoustics, a tiny bit above your budget new I think but worth a look if you see a second hand one locally.

Another vote for a Yamaha F310 - lovely sound, good action and very rewarding to play.

Had mine 2 years and can't imagine the time spent/wasted on it smile

It's quite a big guitar with a full dreadnought body so maybe try one for size before committing!

Best of the best? That'll be Denmark Street in London then! Lost best part of a day there on a recent trip!

Lovely! I imagine if you're in Lancs then you'll have spent a happy hour or two in Frailers, Runcorn? If not, get yourself down there cloud9

Thanks for all the advice.
We're going back to the antique shop to have a look at the goodman again .
not much info out there, but appears to be a luthier in america.

It did look and Sound very nice.
It was light and a nice size.
At probably 115 after a little negotiation, it's not a big risk.
And possibly a steal if hand crafted.

I found a forum where goodman shows his work so i can see how goodman is written on the guitar and the style of 'tensioners' etc he uses.
Will post a photo later.

One thing not mentioned so far which is important -What style does daughter want to play? And how seriously?

Nylon strings for classical, steel for folk/rock/jazz, and the instruments themselves are very different.

Nylon strings are easier on the fingers for an absolute beginner, but that restricts you to the classical genre.

It is a very competitive market, and most of the budget brands nowadays are pretty good.

I think we may pop to a guitar shop and try for size, etc and take it from there.

I have no idea if the godman we found is any good or if it can be tuned easily etc.

Thanks again.

For that budget I recommend a used Takemine G series with some decent strings.

FYI though, I have a Yamaha APX series that I'd let go for £100 and I'm 10 mins from Appleton! :-)

No, that's a new one on me and they certainly seem to have a lot of stock. I'm not so much in the game these days (apparently I have too many guitars although I'd argue that that's impossible). I've never heard of Atkin guitars but there seems to be a few there.

One of these is helpful when you’re starting out 'Fender "Bullet" Chromatic Clip-On Tuner For Guitar/Bass' https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fender-Chromatic-Electric...

There’s a few apps that do tuning too - a Fender one and Cleartune.

Another good app is guitar tuna. As well as tuning it has lyrics and chords for gazillions of songs; original and simplified. It has a neat trick of following your playing and auto scrolling through the song

A capo is worth buying too.
