Rear legroom 4 series vs 3 series (F generation)

Asking what is hopefully a fairly simple question for someone.

I currently own an M240i and will be looking to change in the next 6 months max and my favourite currently is an F generation M4.

I went to a local car supermarket yesterday just to look at the space in a few cars to see whats feasible and what isn't, I didn't look specifically at M cars as they didn't have any so just base models for an idea on space.

I tried an F generaton 320d and with the drivers seat in a comfortable position for me I could also get myself into the rear, which at 6ft4 is good news.

I really fancy an M4 of the same age and accepting the M4 is 3 door, i'm wondering if once inside the rear leg room would be the same? I looked at a 4 series Grand Coupe but I expect they are more spacious than a standard 4 series shape?

If anyone with experience of both can comment I would appreciate it as Google doesnt overly assist.

I've gone from 420d Gran Coupe to 335d saloon. Rear legroom in the 4 seemed ever so slightly better however the sloped roofline gives less headroom.

The real godsend is the hatchback - with the seats down it's cavernous, almost estate-like.

I'd be lying if i I said I haven't regretted getting the saloon over the touring on a few occasions!

Thanks for that, the rear roof sloping is not an issue for me as it will be my kids in the back where needed.

At 6ft4 and c20stone (currently) I rarely fit in the back of a lot of cars; more so with folk near my height/seats back etc

However, I can fit in our F31 with the drivers seat left in my position! There's a bit of room to spare but that's it; when the seats set to my wife's position, there's bags of room, leg & head!

This wasn't the case in the 428i GC we test drove unfortunately... Would have never happened in the coupe

I went for a 435d Gran Coupe recently for family duties with two young kids, and am very pleased with the decision. Plenty of room in the back seats for the kids, and even I fit fine behind my seating position at 6ft 1, definitely not something that could be said for the M4 Convertible I did briefly consider!

The hatchback is great, nice big floor area (although not so much height compared to the 3 touring), plus huge opening which is great with the seats down. We fit a large and awkward shape elliptical trainer in recently for example, which I was surpised with.

I think my biggest gripe, although minor, is that the kids struggle to see out of their windows as the seat base to window height is quite large, I guess a sacrifice for the swoopier and 'sexier' look of the Gran Coupe! Also the rear doors are a struggle to get the kids in an out in normal car park spaces, if you have to lean in to do seat belts.
