whirring and losing power after changing gear

wondering if anybody has come across this problem - just lately my MX5 2012 (48K miles) has been whirring when I change gears and seems to lose power when the noise happens but then recovers and starts accelerating - has this something to do with how the gears are engaging? It has 6 gears and I have had the car for 8 years.
