Morning Guys.

Am a bit of a novice around cars so asking for a little help.

Have been looking at buying a 2016 5 series 530d BMW M sport touring with automatic gearbox. The car currently has around 120k miles on the clock.I have been reading briefly about certain engine types having known issues etc.

So basically does the model of BMW have the known dodgy engine type ? Also when roughly would you be looking at getting the timing chain replaced ?

Thanks

There's no such thing as a dodgy engine; it's all about how it's been looked after and maintained and how regular the oil changes have been done...

That engine is the N57 and its a solid lump; plenty of them out there with very high miles and not needed to have the chain swapped out etc

Only those that have had poor oil change intervals/unloved/poorly maintained that needed that really...

It's all about due diligence, what paperwork the car comes with showing proof of maintenance etc that adds up and gives you peace of mind...

If you're unsure; move on and keep looking. There are plenty of 530Ds out there; find one that's been properly looked after and you're laughing...

If you do want to get the chain changed, budget for c£1500 and find a decent company that knows what they're doing; ADC, Manchester are well respected in this arena:

The 2016 Model should have the B57 I think. Basically if its got FSH and it seems smooth and changes gears smoothly then it should be ok.

I wanted one but gave up after looking at several dodgy exmples. It's a fantastic drivetrain, but typically the ones I looked at had "melting" interiors (check the door handles, all the switchgear, arm rests etc) and also suspension issues (air bags apparently?) that cause them not to sit level.

B57 was G chassis engine so introduced on the G30 5 series in 2017, 2016 will be an F10 with the N57, 7 series got it earlier in 2015 as it was the first G chassis car.

I did think so... It's the heat affecting my brain haha

I looked at 2015 and 2016 F11 530Ds too before I bought my F31

Looks like I got mixed up - the 5 series got the B47 but not the B57!
