Hi – late November 2022 my car started unlocking itself, very common issue and its to do with comfort access. I would walk past the car with the key in my pocket and the locks will go in a spasm. I told my local garage as the car has been on an extended warranty ever since I owned it (5 years). Towards Feb 2023 so 4 months ago it got worser and everywhere I left it, I came back and it was unlocked. Anyways Sytner my local garage are great told me its dangerous leave it in our compound and we will get a car from BMW for you. Four months on its still in there compound and I am still driving BMW courtesy cars. Currently a 520D Estate. I am missing my M5 dearly, 4 months on I want it back. I keep emailing BMW customer services they have chased Germany still no ETA on the part and they still don’t have the materials for the part to be manufactured. I email them every week and their latest reply is the following :

“Thanks for your further email. I'm sorry about the delay in responding to your email. As explained, BMW UK don't supervise part orders. I've been in contact with the parts team in Germany about this, and they've advised there's currently no known estimated time of arrival on parts for your vehicle. In addition, I've spoken to our escalations team requesting a call-back for yourself. I've been advised there's no room for further escalation in this instance as we're not in a position to assist on this matter. BMW UK are unable to offer any support on this occasion - I'm sorry to disappoint you.”

Basically, they are washing there hands and here I am wondering when will my M5 be returning, I have no ETA and they don’t seem to be concerned. Previously they told me they are keeping me mobile, and I cannot pick and choose courtesy cars. I went to see my car in their secure roof top car park last week, four month on brake disks and pads turned yellow, body work dirty with weathering I feel so sorry for my pride and joy. Anyone know if I am liable for compensation of some sort, what would you guys do in my situation?

There is a serious issue with parts supply at the moment. It's not just BMW, it seems to be across many manufacturers.

Mrs Magnum cracked a rear light cluster on her 2 series in February, so I ordered a new cluster from BMW straight away. It arrived last week - 4 months of her driving around with a rear light that I'd bodged together with Epoxy.

Unfortunately, that's the situation with parts right now.

I take it you are waiting for a new comfort access door handle in the right body colour? I had the same issue with mine - eventually all the handles play up. As it was also a security risk (with the transponders they just pull the handle etc) I simply unplugged comfort access connector on all the door handles and the issue went away.

Negative - no comfort access any more
positive - car does not unlock itself and need £400+ per handle if I recall, plus its a little more secure.

Can you ask BMW to do the same whilst you wait for the part?

Yeah I assume so its a door handle, it was the passenger front side playing up. I just hope it arrives very soon I am missing 600 BHP. In the mean time the warranty renews in November and big service due in Feb 2024, I am hoping I get some concessions from them. The car sitting idle for 4 months, same oil its not been started so I am hoping some sort of minor service is done before the car comes back which at this moment I have no times scales.

If its just the handle in the right colour, why not suggest they supply one in any colour and repaint it?

Has to be cheaper for them than keeping you in a loaner?

Not my issue I guess, I don't even know the part required, is it the handle or the controller I have no idea. All I know is I pay £1200 a year in warranty and I want my car fixed.

Loaner can not be cheap, 3 months a M440i and now a brand new M Sport 5 series although a 520D

Surely the simplest solution is to simply code out the comfort access until the part arrives?

They use "special paint" for the comfort access to work... at least that is what i was told. Hence they come painted from the factory

Hi BM Man, sorry to hear you're still without your car.

I believe we've discussed this before, my car had the same issue a couple of months ago and was initially diagnosed as a faulty driver's door handle.

That was replaced and didn't solve the issue and it ended up having all four handles replaced which has solved the problem.

My car wasn't taken off the road, they just told me to walk a few feet away from the car (till the key's out of range of the comfort access) before I locked it and that stops it from unlocking itself.

The handles for mine arrived within 4 weeks. I know they do come painted and my car is a standard colour (Monte Carlo Blue). Is yours an individual colour, is that what's causing the delay?

O/T but I had to wait about 4 months for brake pads for my M5, literally none in the UK at the time. Almost metal on metal when they turned up.
