Have a listen to; John Coltrane - Blue Train
Great recommendation. Mine would be 'Night Train' by Oscar Peterson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axej72xYlAI
If you prefer your jazz a little funkier, then Devlon Lemarr who plays that baseline with his feet(!), and Jimmy James on guitar, is great value: https://youtu.be/jhicDUgXyNg?t=764
My favourite comment is: 'If the drummer was throne on an island for 8 months he would still know what time it is'

Maybe try stuff by Art Tatum / John Coltrane / Thelonius Monk / Joe Pass.
BBC Radio 3 has a regular programme starting at 17:30 on Saturdays called J to Z, which plays jazz standards and more modern stuff. It's really good!
Ken Burns made an excellent documentary series on the history of jazz. It is a superb starting off point for someone who wants to learn about a genre they are attracted to, but doesn’t know how to tackle.
It is aired now and then on PBS America, but you can also pick it up as a box set on disc. I had a copy until Mrs RT lent it to a friend who never bothered to give it back.
I can’t recommend it highly enough

I think it's the heat.
I've moved over from Planet Rock to Jazz FM over the last week or so although a lot of what they play isn't what I'd call "jazz".
I tried Kind of Blue a few times over the years and didn't "get it" however I saw a mention on FB by one of my "friends" and thought I'd give it another try buying a remastered CD and loving it.
There was an American guy came in the museum I work in and was talking about Sidney Bechet and doing a version of his Petite Fleur, bought a Hits CD but not so sure on that one.
Back in the 80's and 90's a work colleague played in a number of Trad Jazz bands round the North East, used to go to listen/watch him on Clarinet & Sax. RIP Trevor.

Evening all,
I’ve found a really fond taking to calm jazz as of the last week. Anyone else like jazz? Any good Spotify playlists to listen to?
I listen to a lot of jazz, a good half of which I don't like. But it is a genre that challenges me and I understand that it is an important influence in other styles of music. It is, also, cool.I’ve found a really fond taking to calm jazz as of the last week. Anyone else like jazz? Any good Spotify playlists to listen to?
But, as others have said, it's a broad church.
You should have a listen to some of the "greats":
Miles Davis
Charlie Parker
Duke Ellington
Chet Baker
Louis Armstrong
John Coltrane
Charles Mingus
Thelonious Monk
Ella Fitzgerald
But then freewheel until you find a sub-genre that appeals.
