Yep , that bank holiday and christmas fave is back on TV ...again ! Every year they trot this old flick out again and again . Haven't the Beeb got any other films they think we might like to see, as I can't imagine there isn't any that hasn't seen it at least 5 times . Yeah, I spose I could make it 6 times. The man McQueen was kinda cool on that painted-up Triumph bike leaping the barb wire fence.

I agree, it's a classic !

Along with "The Big Red 1" which was shown t'other night, "Where Eagles Dare" which was shown recently and likes of The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far etc etc...

I'd rather watch movies like those than be subjected to the endless stream of bilge like Big Brother and all the other reality crap which is so popular amongst the brain-dead UK population.

It's actually been ages since "The Great Escape" was on BBC.

Yes, it is a cliche that every public holiday it gets shown and, like most cliches, it is grounded in fact - it did indeed always get shown.

However, these days it really is seldom shown. I can't remember when it was last on TV anyway.

Well I have to admit that it was the first time I've seen it all the way through..... but one thing puzzles me...... why is this film connected with English football? What did I miss?

How do you mean? What does English football have to do with the great escape?

Well they re-released the DVD last year to coincide with the European Championships didn't they? And the crowd are always singing the theme.

The only connection is that the England Supporters "band" (term used loosely ) let rip with a rendition of the theme from the Great Escape at a match and it's stuck ever since..

It may have been the famous 5-1 hammering we dished out to Germany a few years back but i can't be sure.
