it's just a pile of fridges.

It's so expensive to deal with the CFCs inside the old fridges and freezers they have just piled up, out of control.

I'm sure half of those could be repaired with the spare parts of the other half - and then sold on

Didn't they use to send them fully repaired to Africa?

It needn't be a problem... domestic fridges usually fail for one of two reasons: a dud thermostat - which is trivial to fix - or a gas leak, in which case there are no CFCs left in the thing anyway.

Also, new fridges could perfectly well be made with propane for the refrigerant.

What is really needed is some way to stop people being so bloody wasteful and throwing out fridges which are either trivial to fix or don't need fixing at all. People used to buy one fridge and keep it for the rest of their life - a much better way of doing things. Same applies to pretty well all manufactured goods. The best way to eliminate waste problems is to get people out of the habit of replacing things, and repair them instead.

It's going to be the same for a while when it costs £50 for a repairman to check it out and £100 to buy a new fridge...

It's all a bit silly when you think that Russia, China and India are belching CFSs, CO2 and god knows what else into the atmosphere hand over fist while we stagger about with one arm tied behind our backs legislating oursleves out of existence.
