Hey folks,

I’m considering one of these after moving on my e24 635csi in due course.

Those who know the tax bands on the 2006 onwards 630i might be able to shed some light on this.
In short, I’m loathed to pay such obscene road tax for a car that, if it was older, would be sitting in the garage on a limited mileage classic car insurance policy.

Am I right in thinking it would have to be a later ‘Efficient Dynamics’ N53 engined car (57 plate thereafter) to bring the RFL down to a more modest £180 or so for six months? Parkers is rather confusing on model years and I don’t trust AutoTrader to get its facts right.

Any guidance gratefully received. Thanks.

I had a 2006 56 630i with n52 engine and that was £600. Doesn’t answer your question of course but may be some help with data!

It will need to be one with the steptronic gearbox, and 272bhp. It's Euro 4 spec.

Thanks for this useful info gents,

It would appear that the cars circa 2006 coupe and convertible (convertible has higher emissions) are band L, which equates to £371.25 for 6 months, £675 for the year or a stonking £708 if you decide to go with direct debit. Relative to the car’s value and little use, that’s a lot of money. £10 more taxes a Bentley Continental. I had my suspicions about the high tax group on the 630i but wasn’t 100%. A real shame it’s put me off, given how fantastic that engine is.

That’s really the reason I sold mine. I bought a 640 and kept the 630 alongside it for 5 months, didn’t use it really but I loved it and planned on keeping and hoping they’d increase in value. Then the tax renewal came through, together with a 2007 Volvos xc90 in the same bracket and my 640i I couldn’t really justify spending 600 and keeping as an ornament.

There seems to be many more on the market now in the last 6 months, I m wondering if higher tax, clean air zones and “cost of living” is making owners move away from £700 a year VED cars.

Gave it to we buy any car and I’ve checked recently and it has a fresh MOT so someone got a bargain.

Did they sell these prior to March 2006? I pay £400 for my 6 as it's February 2006 registered.

Not the same I know, but the LCI 3 series brought the efficient dynamics tech in 2008 which dropped the 335i into a lower tax bracket.

You were lucky. The hike in VED started on cars registered after March 2006 when everything became focused on emissions. I assume your car is a 55 plate? There aren't many 630s about that early!
