I have a low mileage Jaguar Xkr 2007, it was highlighted at last service the front subframe is rusted and has a hole approx 40mm x 80mm in it

Plan was to buy a second hand subframe and. Fit but struggling to find any (good) used ones, prestige Jaguar paisley have been looking for me too.

Jaguar want £1800 for a new one

Is it possible to weld a new section in for MOT? If so anyone in the glasgow area people would recommend that could do this ? Or is this a no no for mot

Hi Euan, sorry to see the jag has succumbed to the dreaded tinworm.

Try Peter @ https://www.lorimerfindlay.com/ - he's in South Street and is a great mechanic who did his apprenticeship at Jag. If he can't, then he might know a guy.

also Jamie Gibbon @ https://bearsden.cylex-uk.co.uk/company/gibbon---w... - old skool jag specialist and restorer - if he can't then he will know someone who can.

Good luck

Welding won't be difficult. If you're going to have difficulties it's going to be finding bright metal of suitably healthy wall thickness to weld to. The hole currently is what you see but the material around the hole is completely rotten and it can't be welded to. The hole is going to be substantially bigger before good steel is found. There's still a reasonable chance/risk that the subframe will need to be removed from the car and maybe that anti-roll bar (if that's what it is on the left hand side of the photograph) removed to give access for more complex cutting and welding. i.e. you should be prepared for this not being someone slapping in a 85mm x 45mm rectangle with a mig welder.

longshot, but if you were to consider having the underneath rustproofed, then the guys who did it originally also offer decent welding service (I think the guy was ex RAF or somesuch)

Luckily a a good second hand subframe came up for sale on eBay at a reasonable price so now have this awaiting for fitting, and then can get it all MOT'd and back on the road rather than sitting in garage !
