Bmw 335d issue

Hello can anyone give me some advice,long story short my engine failed bmw wanted to charge me £18000 for a new engine but agreed to £500 telling me new engine new turbos etc fast forward 2 years engine done 8k miles , I have a swirl flap issue thr code reader says it’s broken bank 1 , inside the intake manifold it’s clogged with carbon and crap , I only ever use the more expensive diesel. I don’t understand how that’s possible unless it’s an old part and bmw lied to me , I always leave the car running for 10 mins from cold before even moving then wait a min before turning off , I drive it like a 335d should be driven am I doing something wrong , sorry for my grammer I know it’s sucks

There is no need to wait before moving off, it’s bad for the engine and bad for the environment.

You would have received a new short block. All the ancillary would be swapped over from your old engine. It’s highly unlikely they'd replace everything bolted to the engine.

Do you do a lot of short journeys? What was the original milage of the engine that was replaced?

55k I think the crank shaft snapped , I do more long journeys than short

Does your car have an M57 or N57? I guess an N57. I’m not sure what your question is. Can you clarify what you would like to know?

Define 'long journey' and what type of roads.

8K miles in 2 years suggests not that long.

Indeed, keeping a car idling cold for 10 minutes is not showing mechanical sympathy, I'm amazed people still do this.

I norm do around 30-50 miles motorway I also gave it 2 full service in that time

Do I clean out the manifold and remove the flaps ? Also turn that egr off

When you are on the motorway, I'am assuming you are in the outside lane?

One thing to check is the coolant temperature. It really wants to be in the 90's. If not, the thermostats need replacing.

I'd suggest it's the wrong car for the mileage. I still have an old 535d in the household, towing/odd job car now, but even now that gets to 8-10k pa

If the manifold is clogged I would recommend cleaning or replacing it. I would not recommend deleting swirl flaps as I found the DPF does not regen without them. Re servicing I recommend annual/10k services.

It will have an oil temperature gauge.

The outside lane is the main lane I use unless have to undertake , the coolant stays at 100 once warm with no leaks it’s just all been changed under recall

It;s been written in every car owners manual for the last...what...25 years (at least) to just turn it on and drive. You only need to idle the engine on cold mornings to let the windows defrost.


OP, the swirl flap thing isnt uncommon. My wife had it on a 2005 120d - gummed up swirl flaps. They can be cleaned up (and do the intake valves too).
