F30/31 tyre conundrum - South West

Hi all,

A bit of a long shot but is there anyone on here with an F30/F31, ideally in the South West, running 19" wheels with non-runflat tyres?

Basically I've owned an F31 since January and I love the car BUT the firm ride is starting to really grate and wondered if swapping to non-runflat tyres will improve the ride quality to an acceptable level...or do I just need to swap out of it into something with a better ride!

If anyone is within a 90min drive of Exeter who is willing to take me out for a drive in their non-runflat tyre equipped car that would be much appreciated - beer/wine/gin available as a gesture of appreciation.

On my previous F31 (335d) with adaptive suspension there was quite a difference between the 19” RFT summer and the 18” NRFT winter tyres - how much could be attributed to the higher side profile is debatable but the adaptive suspension also helped.

If you want a plush ride then a G31 5 series may be the answer, the F31 has a firm ride

Can't help you physically

But same scinario more or less

Bought my F31 beginning of Jan. Came on 19 403Ms with RFTs. Tramlined every were, horrible ride and noisy (standard RWD M Sport suspension, non adaptive)

Dropped with 18s with RFT winters. Drive much better but still not as good as it could be

Now on 18" OEM BMW 405Ms with 235/45/18 non RFT Goodyear Assym6 F1 XL tyres all round and the car drives and handles as it should



IMO ditch the RFTs and fit non RFTs and you'll not regret it

I went down from 19” wheels and Pirelli tyres, to 18” wheels and Goodyear EfficientGrip, Both runflats, big improvement in ride comfort.

I have 19inch with RFT and EDC in summer , the change to Goodyear ultragrip 18s over winter has a marked affect on overall comfort. When I change back to the RFTs it feels incredibly jarring for the first few journeys.

I have an older E91 335d and found the ride quality awful. I tried non flats and found little improvement in ride quality. I now have Bird’s suspension which have hugely improved the ride quality even on 19” run flats.

17” on mine with rft, comfortable drive.

OP do you have the m sport suspension?

It's a 335d so I believe it runs the SE spec suspension?!

I think you've confirmed my thoughts, in that a swap of tyres and possibly a reduction in wheel size will of course garner improvements but deep down I think still won't be satisfied with the end result so you may well see a F31 335d in the classifieds in the coming week/months

That's not a reason to sell your car!

a) is it xDrive? b) have you had the suspension fully checked over?

As said; 18s with non RFTs are perfect IMO; the car drives & handles superbly and some of the country roads that surround me are atrocious on a good day!

19s with non RFTs will make a huge difference; but sometimes a suspension geo tweak/fast road set up after a full tracking and alignment can make a massive difference too!

Investigate those things first before you bin the car, IMO

My 335d F31 was just plain nasty on anything other than snooker table spec tarmac and was also "hilariously" inept on greasy roads and downright dangerous in the snow on its Bridgestone RFs

It was a lease car so I didnt bother throwing money at it however the F30/1 board on Bimmerpost is a great resource and almost had me tempted

My F30 335d is fine on all roads, especially after going down to 18” and using Goodyear EfficientGrip runflats. It loves wet roundabouts, and you can come out of them full pelt and the thing is stable and direct. Another delight is full-throttle out of a gravel track onto a grippy road. Very well-behaved and secure.

I have a 2017 F31 on 19’s with non run flats and it’s perfectly fine. It was also fine when it had run flats. 330d x drive thing if that makes a difference.
