996 Turbo - Sachs Performance Clutch Biting Point

Hi All

I really purchased a 996 Turbo manual that has had a Sachs Performance clutch fitted about 5000 miles ago.

I’ve included an extract from the service history detailing what was done.

I’m about 250 miles into ownership and am finding it very tricky to use. The biting point almost feels binary so I have to be incredibly concentrated when driving - especially in start stop traffic.

Can anybody tell me if this the nature of this type of clutch? Do you get used to it over time? I’m finding it quite hard work!

Its probably your clutch slave or master cylinder on the way out which is a common issue on manual 996 and 997.1 turbo. Take to any decent indy like Porsche Torque, 9e , JZM, RPM etc and they'll sort. The Sachs 890nm should feel lighter than stock clutch to use. The only time they feel binary is when you have installed a LWFW (not recommended by me in a turbo I found it awful and went back to a dual mass).

Thanks pal. Yes - no LWFW installed so likely your first suggestion which I shall get checked out.

LWFW is ok if you fit a sprung clutch. The standard 996T clutch is a solid plate due to the DMFW, but people don't change it.

I’ve had the Sachs 890 on my remapped 996 turbo for a year now and I’m always baffled at the lack of negative reviews online about it. I’ve found it frankly awful. Nothing like stock. The high bite point is unlike any other clutch I’ve had before (I’ve had allsorts of big power modified cars) and totally onredfaceff feel. Bite point is about a 1cm window. Pulling away in traffic hard work and on a hill it’s solid! Zuffenhaus said it’s fine lol. Friends Green changed the slave, clutch accumulator, servo assistance spring. It’s bit better. I made my own clutch stop yesterday and a drive to caffeine and machine to test it today. Another improvement in the experience. But I still regret the remap and installing it. Wonder if anyone has found a solution??

That's not really a big power clutch, should feel like stock. Pretty sure I had that on my own car for a while.

Sounds more like your DMFW is toast, which is dampening the clutch engagement, hence on/off feeling.

If it’s that bad I’d be speaking to Mike at Sports and Classic or Matt at Fearnsport to see what their view is.
