Net migration added 606,000 to UK's population in 2022

A staggering number, but hopefully some one-off's (Ukraine, HK) which won't be repeated in future years, unless of course we need the extra skilled workforce to bolster our own.

Once asylum is granted for these that come via the boats I presume there will be dependents who follow legally, wives, children and so on

The governemt is addicted to ths sort of thing as it makes the economy look better. Even though its ste really.
Just thing of a long term tourist/consumer. Good news at the start when they are spending the money they brought with them.
Later on it becomes a problem as they start sucking up more resources than they provided.

Interesting statistic from the BBC page

asylum seekers made up about 8% of immigration into the UK from outside the EU

So the boat people are a much smaller number when all of the net migration to the UK is taken into account

It is a government policy, one that gets repeated at the end of every sentence, have you not noticed? It has become a major issue that the government supposedly has to fix.

Whilst that has happened, over a million new people have come to the country in the last year through choice of the government and c. 606k net.

Hence the piss taking out of the "stop the boats" policy of the government. It's about 5% of the new people coming to the country. The government is happy to have huge levels of migration. I thought Brexit was supposed to bring this back under control?

Maybe extra cheap workforce would be more accurate?

We also need lots of extra bodies to keep the housing shortage alive, otherwise prices would drop and and our economy would come unglued.

It's also interesting to consider the emigrants.
A lot of these people are above average in either the wealth or talent stakes, often both.

Of course some of the outbound people were never here for the long term, and some of the inbound are expats crawling back to the NHS.

The headline figures are not the whole story, but it's hard to see this going well for the UK in the long run.

Interesting point, never thought about needing vast sums of extra people to bolster the housing market to maintain the mortgage and finance market, great shout.

But these are recorded, we all know the numbers are higher, this is just what they wanted to show you.
